should be in football talk perhaps, but Lingard, Alli and Oxlade-Chamberlain are inside forwards and Henderson, Dier and Drinkwater are half backs, in fact we now play with a centre back (Stones), two full backs, a centre half (Henderson) and two wing halves (or wing backs as we now call them), two inside forwards, two outside forwards(sterling and Rashford) and a centre forward (Kane) - which is 3-2-2-3 which is actually the old 3-2-5 in disguise, so if Tunisia play 4-2-4 with a deep lying centre forward like the Hungarians did at Wembley in '53 they may be expected to win 6-3. Just a thought - valid though, we've almost reverted to W M because we now clearly have defensive and attacking midfielders in very different roles rather than the old box-to-box merchants like Lampard or Gerrard or Colin Bell, though inside forwards did get up and down quite a bit back in the day apparently.

I recall the formation which was dubbed the 'Christmas Tree' ! And what happened to the good old "Sweeper" or "Libero" and players rushing out at set-pieces arms raised in the air to catch opponents offside ? Not forgetting of course the old 'Catenaccio' defensive system. Edited by Willo (06 Jun 2018 6.53pm)

back in 2010 when we were really rather pony I recall Doogie using david Wright as a libero regularly - the guy had two left feet but the best positional sense i've ever seen in any player - a masterstroke by the doog, Wrighty was everywhere, on the wing receiving the ball when a move broke down, on the end of crosses and sweeping up behind when the centre backs joined the attack, he's now with Norwich under 23s, one day he'll manage a league 2 side and have a bit of each way on whichever lucky team is smart enough to employ his services and toast me once you've collected your winnings, that's all i ask
