Two days before their first World Cup game, because he took the offer of the Real Madrid job.

Mad innit?

Real are just arrogant and he was disrespectful, so I'm inclined to side with Spain on this one.

The whole scenario was unnecessary, and could so easily have been diplomatically unveiled after the tournament, even if Lopetegui's representatives wanted to arrange such a move on the sly. It strikes me that Real did not want to be seen to be unable to hire a coach for such a long time, so put their own interests first.

I still wouldn't right them off to do well, but it is hilarious.

Also, international managers generally aren't as well paid as club managers, the only exception being the absurd salaries paid out to England managers, especially considering the spectacular failure of most of them

Agreed, it's also very easy to quit after a tournament under the guise of "I failed" or "we won, my job is complete".

The French can't be happy that someone else has stolen their 'let's do something crazy' crown.

There is time for them to top it. Paul Pogba needs to step up to the plate!

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Punch the coach or get a red card in the opening 5 minutes of their opening fixture type of thing?

Set fire to the hotel maybe?
