Interesting this.....it's about political decay and stasis in institutions.

O’Sullivan’s Law states that any organization or enterprise that is not expressly right wing will become left wing over time. The law is named after British journalist John O’Sullivan.

Right wingers are willing to hire left-wing employees in the interest of fairness. However, once left-wingers, reach the stage where they can hire they don't display the same tolerance and will not hire conservatives.

The result over time is that conservative enterprises are infiltrated by leftists but leftist enterprises remain the same or get worse.

You could say the same about UK plc.

We were more right wing in the 60's and had a more integrated society.

Like the BBC you mean. Once the most conservative (small c ) of institutions today a hot bed of lefties.

I am not sure O'Sullivans law is true but my emotional gut (bias) tells me it is.

I think its half true in political history, they usually suggest that nations tend to go through cycles of left to right and right to left. Makes sense, if your country goes belly up then you will blame the wing thats in power and go the other way next time.

I think they normally look at it in cycles of communist/socialist and capitalist/conservative but it makes sense that it applies to any situation.

I think the explaination of 'they start hiring people from the other side...'is a little farfetched but the belief that inevitably your beliefs will change if the side you support leave you let down when they are in power is more believable...

Think I rambled and im not sure I even contributed to the conversation looking back at it! My bad...

Pretty ballsy for it to be called a law rather than a theory.

Some situations you might get a 'maybe' out of it but I think the definition of 'institutions' could be important. Its definatly an interesting theory but it feels like one of those ones that is easy to say, impossible to prove and will just reinforce what you already believe. If you a righty, you will 'reckon' that sounds correct and if you are a lefty, you will 'reckon' its the sort of thing that the right believe because they are 'a bit like that...'

I think for proof of this you only have to look at the politics of the institutions.

Nail Freguson said it's happened to universities. The number of left to right professors use to be quite even but that the lower tolerance of the left has led to universities becoming increasingly left wing and.....just not hiring conservatives.

Public institutions shouldn't be dominated by a political ideology. There should be balance.

In science a theory is a more complete explanation than a law.

I think any balanced look at the institutions tends to suggest it.

Agreed but I think if this 'law' proves anything, its that balance is impossible. Trying to get balance in a workplace of any kind is like trying to get everyone on twitter to agree on something, it should be easy on paper but its impossible for your politics to not influence your decisions. I personally dont care what someones politics are as long as the word 'far' cant apply to it. In an ideal world it shouldnt make a difference if an institution is full of left or right, they are not there to indoctrinate people in the first place...I do get that we are not in an ideal world though...
