Visitors to Mail Online who use the Microsoft Edge browser can now see a statement asserting that “this website generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability” and “has been forced to pay damages in numerous high-profile cases”.

The message, which is produced by a third-party startup called NewsGuard, tells readers to proceed carefully given that “the site regularly publishes content that has damaged reputations, caused widespread alarm, or constituted harassment or invasion of privacy”.

It gives Mail Online, one of the world’s biggest news websites, one out of five on credibility – the same level as the Kremlin-backed RT news service.

I blame Microsoft, they shouldn't be loading this application automatically. Interfering in the spreading of 'correct' information by the Mail Online to counter all those fake news stories.

The manipulation of the internet for political purposes is very disturbing.
We are getting to the point where no media can be trusted.

Good job we have politicians to help us navigate that mine field then.

Politics is about lying but the news outside of tabloids used to be mostly reliable. Now it is pure propaganda.

It is easy to imagine that what has changed is our age and the ability to recognise it but I am sure that this change is real and growing as fast as technology allows.

I came to the conclusion long ago that there is no objectivity in news.

But I do like news organisations that at least try!!

The most respected news source I know of on political stuff is Tim Pool....and he's an old school leftie..even a Sanders supporter.....but for obvious reasons he is focused on US and Internet news and is growing quickly on YouTube.

I think this is the way forward in the future.....independent news organisations that refuse ties and money from political sides but take from patrons supporting someone trying to be honest without the activism.

Not that I agree with Tim Pool on fifty percent of his personal views.....but I've watched him long enough to vouch for his integrity.

Totally reliable. I live my life by it. Off to walk the Corgis and then perv at Holly Willoughby. So right about her latest fashion pick.

It would be more accurate to blame the Mail itself which is the biggest spreader of false stories around today, with the exception of Fox News.

I know a journalist who used to work for the Mail. He has told me a thing or two about how they are instructed to present things.

Do we know how neutral this NewsGuard thingummy actually is? Will it be flagging up the BBC news site for regular peddling of bias?

I've known journos for one or two papers and they're all under instructions to toe a particular line. I concede, however, that the Mail is a particularly egregious example of the promulgation of complete and utter bullsh*t. They're just more open about it, that's all. They're certainly not in the subtlety business.
