The slaughter of elephants

55 Elephants currently being killed every single day by poachers for their tusks. Truly, truly horrific.

More elephants are currently being poached than being born. The future is pretty bleak for these intelligent animals unless urgent action is taken.

I strongly appeal to all Palace fans to get behind this and adopt an Elephant for their kids/grand-kids/nieces/nephews etc.

Takes less than a minutes to donate.

That's what certain societies do.

The lack of stable non corrupt institutions means they end up destroying the resources they have.

Whoa back, the WWF are you serious?

They routinely endorse auctioning hunting licences for elephants, rhinos and lions to the highest bidders.

Just returned from Sri Lanka, where we visited the Elephant nursery and also went on a safari to see the elephants (and other animals) in a massive wildlife sanctuary.....I dont know how anyone could hurt the majestic beautiful creatures and we will be donating directly to the sanctuary and the elephant nursery....they are doing fantastic work and need all the help they can get

F*cking heartbreaking.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

This disgusts me.

The Elephant is a highly intelligent and magnificent creature.
Give me a rifle and I would happily shoot poachers and trophy hunters myself.

Poaching of any endangered species should be a crime punishable by death.
Funding animal conservation by profiting from hunting seems to me to be a pragmatic step too far and any hunting of endangered species even if controlled is morally abhorrent.

Sadly the increasing human population means that other animal life on this planet is doomed.

Me and you both. Since most of these endangered animals hail from the third world arm pits of the globe, there is absolutely no hope.

And this is where the answer lies,...in eco-tourism.
It used to be that huge areas of vulnerable habitat were deemed viable for de-forestation and killing of endangered species.
This was largely in countries with struggling economies.
Then (regulated)tourism became a viable economic alternative

That is the way forward. Plus armed soldiers paid large bonuses to kill poachers

Indeed that's what I thought,it must be a deterrent.

My sons regiment were in Kenya quite recently training the guards against poachers.

If you want a rifle , you won’t struggle to get one in Africa.
