So who do we pay? Corrupt African leaders? How much do the French, Dutch, Belgium, Italians and Germans owe? And a simplistic black victim white devil assessment given the origin of many of those transported. They were usually not Kunta Kinte off hunting a lion, as romantic as that image is, they were prisoners of tribal wars freely traded by the forefathers of the very purported recipients of the cash.

And as others point out, why only Britain? The Spanish and Portuguese were knee deep and continued long after us. And why only slaves of the Atlantic slave trade? The Arabs carried on and still do it. And what of e.g. the Romans? Does the Italian government need to compensate pretty much all of Europe, North Africa, the Near and Middle East?

If this is grandstanding to keep alive the horrors of this genocide I have no issue. The Jews quite rightly ram home the holocaust at every opportunity and the evidence of prominent deniers and those who genuinely have no idea it happened justifies it. Why not the descendents of the enslaved. However if this is a genuine attempt to extort money from wealthy nations then they need to get real.

Now if they made a sensible / claim for projects that would benefit the population, for example: An appropriate number of infrastructure projects - schools, hospitals, power stations, sewage treatment plants etc (with managers / staff to run them for say 10 years whilst they became integrated self sufficient) with a clear mandate that upon completion the debt is paid then they have a much better chance of getting something.
