Just scanning the site I saw our average attendance list. Season 83 through to 88 didnt top 10k. One year was less than 6.5k.
That was when the ground was 51000 capacity. I remember those halcyon days and the jokes going round about put an x where the fan was going to stand and shouting across the pitch to lock up when you leave. That's when the away end was the quadrant by the arthur and holmsdale. A coach load of fans sometimes. Ahh the innocence

Shrewsbury Town and Swindon, those were the days. Away days at Oxford, actually pretty sh1t in comparison to now. One bonus was knowing a good few of the crowd. And more or less all of you could go to one pub.

our capacity was about 30k back then - the whitehorse had been demolished and was being replaced by the family stand - still it was more a case of 'spot the crowd' than spot the ball, the wheels really came off, strange how the support disappeared so drastically, I think footy crowds generally were a bit lower, but people gave up on the club after the Bloye implosion, we haven't fully recovered, and we won't have done until we get a decent ground to fill

Noades arrived at the club when we were in the mire with gates very sparse in the old 'Division Two'.I can recall all the empty spaces in the ground.

Under his leadership we got promoted to the top division, finishing one season in 3rd place, reached an FA Cup Final and won the ZDS Cup.Indeed we suffered relegations but we kept bouncing back to the Premier League.

Noades of course appointed Coppell which proved a masterstroke.Noades was of course a divisive figure and pilloried in some quarters but I recognise his achievements at the club when he was at the helm.

Watching the youtube video on here of Palace against Wolves illustrates how far we fell in the space of 2 years further compounded by the appointment of the Antichrist Mullery as manager. I cannot remember one positive of when he was in charge. Every game was depressing.

To be fair to Mullery he never had any money to spend and in his two seasons in charge we finished 15th and 18th in the old 'Division Two'.Some of our gates were in the 5000s and I think some under that figure.

Coppell followed Mullery and he lost 7 of his first 10 matches in charge. He has now achieved legendary status for all his achievements at the club.I had the pleasure of sitting in the row behind him,in close proximity, at the Newcastle game.

I remember one match for one incident - opponent and score both lost - when Mullery was shouting instructions from the bench and a voice rang out from the Arthur “For fvck sake Mullery will you SHUT UP”. It was as though someone had yelled out in a library.

Mullery could be hilarious - we'd be 1-0 down at home to Barnsley in front of 4000 and Mullery would be on the touchline with his sheep skin, shades, black leather gloves and cigar barking out orders like he was big time. I remember him heading a ball out from the bench and west ham's ray stewart volleying it straight back at him, to which Mullery got off his seat again with a v-sign aimed at stewart. He did OK, he was better than Peter Taylor, though he did bring in some dross, e.g. Lacy and McCulloch, but he was not a good fit.

Don’t remember the opponents as was only a kid back then but whoever our keeper was at the time (May have been Barron) ran in to the post and knocked himself out. He was spark unconscious.
The ref and all the players stood round him looking worried, then the ambulance guys rushed on but still no sign of life.

Next thing you know, Mullery has left the dugout and is sprinting across the pitch towards him in a sheepskin coat and sun glasses. Literally at the point when he gets to the goal the keeper springs himself up on his feet like a f@cking jack in a box, obviously still not fully compos mentis, it was like a miracle.

Will never forget as the bloke in front of me as quick as you like shouts out ‘he must of showed him his wallet’

Time may have embellished elements of this story

I recall going to an away game at Swindon which was played on a Sunday in I believe the late 80s.

We were leading 2-1 when in the final minute, Tony Finnigan at right-back advanced down the right flank and instead of taking the ball towards the corner flag decided to cross it.Swindon broke away to score and the match ended 2-2.I was spitting feathers and I regret to say vented my spleen by resorting to some profane language.
I was still in a steaming bate as I entered a public house not far from my residence.

I did set off to go to Shrewsbury, I believe in the 80s, but heard en-route that the game was postponed due to snow so had to return home.

I recall going to the Manor Ground in the 70s to see our team play Oxford Utd who were then managed by Gerry Summers.Don Rogers scored and I have a feeling it was a 1-1 draw but it is so long ago so the score might be incorrect.

Think I was at that game. Was it Rogers first game?
