I regret that I wouldn't trust a former referee to be objective. I still remember with bitterness that goal against Leeds (I think) many years ago which clearly crossed the line then was cleared - and disallowed. It was such a blatant refereeing error that the BBC actually brought on a retired official on the Today programme the following Monday to try to justify it.

This guy was utterly shameless, pointing out that the ref had relied on the linesman, who couldn't see the ball because a player was obstructing his view. Yes, and the player obstructing his view was behind the goal line! So where was the ball?
