He was right about Germany winning it though.

Of course there would be a massive over reaction from the lefty purists. There was no reaction from me I'm afraid - I grew up hearing this stuff all the time. Just everyday chat.

Nothing my old man liked more than prunes in his rice pudding. Ni***rs in a snow storm he called it. No more offensive than hearing rumours about new players on the jungle drums.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

It’s a generational thing. In that era and before we were free to say anything and no offence was shown. Nowadays everyone is reall y suppressed and the youngsters just accept that. But there are plenty whose thoughts are old school even though they contain it. The world has become so secretive and hypocritical driven largely by policial correctness and lies.

it was an innocent remark, back in the days of Robertson's jam, b&w minstrels, eeny meeny etc and not having that in the lexicon anymore is progress, referring to people that way or using an outdated phrase are two completely different things, it was strange that Garth Crooks was next to him but it shows it was naivety from Sir Geoff, our Roy did something similar with Andros for England (feed the monkey) - it would be stupid to condemn Hurst in the same way as monkey chanters, but it is a good thing that phrases like that are unacceptable now. The PC mob are right in this case, I'm left leaning but I get the frustration with much of the tokenism and positive discrimination towards various minorities these days. Today's dogmatic left depress me - where are the Atlees, Gaitskills and Smiths? Labour offer either sixth form marxism or Blairism.

I remember being in a meeting with colleagues back in 1999 (yes, a real meeting, not a digital one) and one of the attendees was black. Another attendee used this exact phrase, at which point there was a tumbleweed moment (for about 30 seconds). At which point said attendee was asked to leave the meeting, with their superior. They never returned.

I like to consider myself very aware of racist remarks, but it was only drawn to my attention recently that terms such as "cotton pickin'" and "sold down the river" also have negative racial connotations.

It is an unfortunate remark but seemingly innocent and generational.

It shows just how far the cultural shift has shifted and starkly shows just how correct Powell was when he said fifty years ago how the 'whip hand' would change.

Said now this national icon would be demonised and hated....led by the Twitter and corporate/political activists.

Except the black man did nothing whilst a guy next to him made a racist comment. Hardly, a change in the whip hand. In fact, not a change at all.

It's staggeringly predictable how you try and spin this to make white people sound like a victim when a white man has just used racist language whilst sat next to a black man.

There's no lefties on here condemning what Hurst said. It was a dumb thing to say, but in 31 years times have changed. Nothing a quiet word in private couldn't resolve.

Powell wasn't right, he was sacked, and has been widely condemned ever since.

I said how Hurst would be treated if he'd said it today. If you think that's incorrect then quite frankly I think you're lying. So he would be demonised but in your world's that's obviously fine.

Most people understand that a 'racist' remark is only racist if it's intended to be. What Hurst said was unfortunate and as I said and came from his generation and the generations before that.

Now I don't think in your terms so if you want to demonise past generations as terribly racist that's for you. However, back in the adult world we understand that different eras contained different language. Instead what matters is what someone actually does....I'm not aware that Hurst ever did anything other than be a national icon.

As for Powell, the conservative elites sacked him....though he continued to be popular in the party. However as you also fail to recognise he had widespread public support....over seventy percent for what he said in the opinion polls at the time.

Whether Powell was sacked isn't important, unless you just want to display your elitist cuckoldry. What is important is was he accurate or not....you see the truth matters...even if it gets you sacked.

And once again, the Times ran a poll for best PMs we never had and he came joint third.....not bad for someone who died over twenty years ago and whom you dismiss.

"Most people understand that a racist remark is only racist if it's intended to be". That's barely a sentence. It's a racist remark if if meets the definition of racist. There's no debate from anyone that Hurst made a racist comment. There's also no lefties screaming for him to be lynched or similar. They aren't even claiming he is racist, people are just saying it was a stupid thing to say. You're repeated obvious attempts to make yourself the victim isn't working.

Hurst has plenty of media commitments today and a twitter account. I'd be confident he wouldn't use that language today and would probably look back on the interview cringing at his former self.

You don't think in my terms, you just moan about how hard done by you are. An attitude of a failure. You've once again disingenuously claiming I'm demonising him, when all I said was needed was a quite word in private - along the lines of "don't say that again geoff, it's offensive". Then the matter would be dealt with. This is your victim mentality.

I've been pretty consistent in saying we should judge people in the past by today's standards.

We've all heard boring old farts bang on about Enoch Powel. They are the type of people that lack the emotional intelligence to realise that pretty much everyone around them is rolling their eyes waiting for throwback to stop talking so they can get on with their lives. What the boring old farts never realise is that they become the butt of all jokes as soon as they leave the room. No credible person would cite that speech now.

As for bringing up obscure polls from the past, you are really clutching at straws. People were claiming Marcus Rashford should be PM a few months ago. But trying to discredit the fact that he was sacked for his statement just shows how disingenuous you are.

I note you've started to throw round many little digs here and there as you repeatedly lose arguments. You just sound like a crybaby.

I have made my points and I don't wish to get involved in a pointlessly continual argument with the mentally low powered over what is and isn't reality.

Awww resorting to insults before running away and playing the victim again.

If you don't want to want to get involved in pointless continual arguments, don't bore everyone by bringing up arguments what were resolved decades ago. You lost then, you're losing now, and your future is bleak.

Meanwhile, it sounds like myself, Wisbech, and DanH all have pretty good lives.

No matter how you dress it up, you're veiw point is obvious, and posts are predictable. They fill up these boards day after day, but interest no one. You could save yourself some time and just post "Stirlingsays doesn't like immigrants" after any issue.
