Our best football ever?

So I was saying to my son... In my life, I think this is the best football I can remember us playing, so he should cherish this moment (he absolutely is). Maybe this team loses to the best Coppell side, but the best Coppell side was unashamedly bang-it-and-whack it. I saw Dowie, Bruce and even Freedman teams play lovely stuff in the second tier. But it was in the second tier and nowhere near this intensity. Then there was the team of the '80s but honestly I can't remember that team as I was young and hardly got to see it anyway. So, based only on the football being pleasing to watch, how does this stack up in people's minds?

Remember the purple patch under Bruce but Championship. Pulis, Allardyce and even Pardew had little runs where we were very effective but this seems to be on a different level. We dominate the ball, look to play every opportunity and really should be higher up the table. Trying not to get carried away - let’s see what the next 2 months bring but certainly, very enjoyable.

Some of the football we played in the early part of 1979-80 was "cracking", but it did fall away rather rapidly. Maybe it's slightly too early to make the "best-ever" judgement, but the current standard of play is pretty damned good. Edited by YT (08 Nov 2021 8.50am)

I do remember the team of the '80's, and what an exciting time it was. But it was all too short. The difference today is that I feel that the progress is being managed with the future in mind. You might also consider that the current team comprises the best players we've ever had... CG, WZ, EE, with Olisé, Joel and OE not far behind. Whereas other outstanding players of the past (in my mind) include Kenny Sansom, Don Rogers, Nigel Martyn, AJ. So yes, I agree, these are the most exciting times and long may it last. And now, when you tell someone that you support the Palace, people no longer respond with the question 'Why'?

Now we got Texter looks like the new stand will go ahead. As we are building it over the existing it won’t disrupt the crowd noise during construction.

We're playing very attractive football at the moment. No doubt about it, and getting the results too. Best ever? Probably. But difficult to make comparisons with past teams because so much has changed. The pitches, the balls, the quality of opposition and coaching. Consider all these things (and more probably) and we certainly should look better than, say, Terry Venables' team. Everything about the game in general today is so much more structured and 'professional'. Like most sports really. Suffice to say, I'm enjoying watching us play stylish, attacking football more today than the last few seasons for sure.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Once we get the new stand the Arthur gantry will go and all the top tier fans will realise there is a full pitch out there.

There were times under Tel when, if you were playing away, Palace would swarm and you could hear a silent tension in the home crowd, if you know what I mean. There's no doubt that, in their day, they were a smart and confident side. However, given the skill level and intensity of the modern game, this side has to be considered as the best we've ever had. I looked back at the 4-3 semi final win over Liverpool and the level of skills in that game was comparatively poor compared to what we regularly see on a weekend these days.
