Whatever happens going forward, observing the Trump obsessed on here going into self righteous melt down is going to be very amusing through the winter months.

The polls next year will likely dictate who are the candidates rather than anything else.

The GOP will be praying as hard as they can Biden somehow gets the Dem nomination. For me , more likely is a relatively unknown will emerge and as usual, the economy will be the most significant factor

Pro life Republicans winning recently may indicate that the abortion debate is not a hill the GOP will be prepared to die on.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

Trump doesn't usually enter competitive arenas, unless he is certain of a win.
It's certainly going to be interesting viewing

It's certainly going to be interesting, but that doesn't mean it's welcome. That there is is now even the remotest prospect of Trump becoming the POTUS again and the de facto leader of the free world is bad news for the USA and depressing for everyone else.

I am actually quite surprised at the announcement. The noise around him seemed to indicate that they wanted him to become the King maker, rather than the King. A role in which he could still have an impact and get the attention he craves. Although I think it's true he hates the thought of losing, more than the joy of winning, he does face the prospect of losing on many fronts at the moment and seems to think being a candidate diminishes the chances of losing on them. So perhaps, not unusually, this is all a personal decision and not really driven by public spirit.

I await the assessments of his chances, either to get the nomination or the WH if he does. There are, of course, still many unknowns. Not least who would be his opponent. I am unsure whether this makes is slightly more, or less, likely that Biden will run. He is showing a better public face at the moment, the mid-terms went well and the economic news not quite so bad, but he is soon to be 80. The prospect of having an 86 year old as POTUS won't play well, so I expect him, at the appropriate moment to withdraw and clear the path for a more youthful candidate. Especially if Trump looks like getting the nod. He will turn 80 himself in 2026, midway through the next term. DeSantis would be a much harder candidate for the Dems to beat.

I agree with Wisbech on two counts. Firstly, the prospect of Trump actually succeeding to become POTUS again is a frightening one for all of us.

Secondly, DeSantis would be a better option by miles.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Some good points from the BBC.

Personally I think they're both too old. It doesn't speak well for either party to have two candidates who are, or will be, 80.

My instincts are that Trump will not get the nomination; both Republicans and the US population at large know how awful he was at the hard yards of governing and all the constant chaos that ensued. As others have said, De Santis and potentially others look much more likely candidates. Indeed, maybe Trump is just cynically trying to shift the agenda from his many self inflicted legal woes.

In terms of Biden, I think he believes he can certainly beat Trump and rid the US of the kind of division he represents. Maybe he will simply wait until it is clearer who the Republican candidate will be before making a firm decision - assuming that's possible. I certainly take the point in earlier posts about an 86 year old President. That said, his steady judgement/gravitas on so many fronts- including Ukraine - is hugely welcome in todays world. Maybe his life's work will be not only to see off Trump but also Putin!

I think he is a spent force, yesterday's man, he doesn't have the same numbers as he did before or the media backing,he's been impeached twice and still can't put a sentence together without stopping and starting, a bit like my typing without a comma, it might be on purpose like bungle bad hair day, he is known to buff it up before a speech! Trumps fans are fanatical, he has 100 million dollars to run, so it will be interesting but here at cpnews.com we predict he will fall shirt, lump on people and remember the commission !

What the world needs right now is a trump! Since the 2020 rigged elections that forced Trump out the world has fallen into chaos!

I do like the look of de santis however a good family man and pro lifer and did not go for all that covid nonsense.

Do agree, looks like a spectacular own goal, DeSantis would be a formidable candidate.
