Narrowing down my favourite movies to a list of five is no easy task, but here is my personal selection:

1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
I know it's become a predictable choice in this list, but there is a reason why so many people have named it in their top five. An immensely gripping and powerful prison drama from start to finish, this gloriously triumphant film is everything a movie should be, and more; dramatic, moving, and above all uplifting, with characters for whom you can feel genuine warmth and compassion. If you are one of the few who has yet to be inspired by this most sublime masterpiece, then you must buy it, unplug the phone, switch off the lights, disconnect your doorbell and treat yourself to the finest two hours of movie magic you could ever wish to experience. Truly a gem to treasure forever.

2. Some Like It Hot (1959)
What more can be said of the best comedy movie of all time that hasn’t been said already? I have seen it around 10 times, and have found something different to laugh at on each occasion. Billy Wilder and Izzy Diamond were made for each other, and this is probably the finest example of their peerless writing and directing collaborations ever recorded on celluloid. Add to their genius an Oscar-nominated Jack Lemmon and a typically flawless comic performance by the greatest movie actress of them all and you have a true cinema classic. I’m literally laughing at it even now as I’m typing this. Absolutely perfect.

3. Back To The Future I – III (1985/89/90)
Not only is this fantastic trilogy an amazingly clever, funny and fascinating piece of pure escapism in it’s own right, but it, particularly Part I, means a lot to me personally as it was probably my favourite movie as a kid. Seeing it again now, and even hearing that Huey Lewis soundtrack, brings back some of my happiest childhood memories. What 9 year-old boy could resist a story about a time-travelling sports car? Even today I can’t help but wonder what, if it were possible, the consequences of time-travel might be. I loved it then, and I still love it now.

4. North by Northwest (1959)
People may talk about Psycho whenever Alfred Hitchcock’s name comes up, but to me, as good a film as Psycho is, North by Northwest is his best work. Shot on location all over the US from Grand Central Station to Mount Rushmore, this story of an advertising executive who is mistaken for a secret agent is non-stop action, excitement and intrigue, full of some of Hitchcock’s most recognisable scenes and set pieces. Even the opening bars of Bernard Herrmann’s theme score are enough to make my spine tingle.

5. Charade (1963)
This romantic comedy mystery thriller proves possible what today seems impossible – that a romantic element can be brought into a storyline without making your skin crawl. Along with Henry Mancini’s Oscar-nominated theme song, the thing I love about this movie is the veritable labyrinth of twists and turns in the plot, with a storyline that seems to stay a few steps ahead of the viewer at all times, constantly revealing more and more surprises right up until the very last scene. If you thought Cary Grant always played the good guy, then think again...and again...and again...and again. Expect the unexpected.

So there you have it, my top five films, but like many people there are plenty of other great movies I could have named that may have scraped into my top five on a different day. Movies like 12 Angry Men, The Fortune Cookie, The Odd Couple, Stalag 17, The Sting and that perennial feel-good favourite, It’s A Wonderful Life. Special mention also should be given to the Star Wars trilogy and E.T. as I grew up with them and are still just as entertaining today as they ever were.
