Have you tried watching other movies?

1. The Thin Red Line.
2. The Wild Bunch.
3. Amelie.
4. Days Of Heaven.
5. Alien or Aliens (can't decide).
6. WALL-E (the best animated movie ever made; so fight me).
7. Princess Mononoke.
8. Unforgiven.
9. The Godfather.
10. The Silence Of The Lambs.

Honourable mentions to:

La Haine, Schindler's List, Duel, Goodfellas, Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven, Saving Private Ryan, North By Northwest, Das Boot, Full Metal Jacket, Raging Bull, The Terrorist, High Noon, 300, The Good The Bad & The Ugly and any other Sergio Leone western.

And Shawshank Redemption can sling its hook. It's a good movie. Good. As in less than great. More than terrible. But less than great.

This
An average movie that is now one of my most hated, purely because it's held in such a ridiculously high esteem. If you tell me this is your favourite movie, I will consider all of your opinion on anything null and void.

Anyway - here (in no order) is my top 27 (I'm greedy)

A Streetcar named Desire
The Turin Horse (Tarr)
12 Angry Men
Stalker (Tarkovsky)
Manhatten
Severn Samurai
Die Zauberflote (version with Diana Damrau as Queen of the Night)
Bullitt
Dr Strangelove
Ghost World
It's a Wonderful Life
Whistle Down the Wind
The Wild Bunch
Lost in Translation (mostly for the inspired use of My Bloody Valantine)
The Godfather
Once Upon a Time in the West (O.U.A.T.I. America is truly dreadful imo)
Brazil
West Side Story
Naked (Mike Leigh)
The Third Man
The Last Picture Show
Amadeus
Dawn of the Dead
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
Happiness
Guys and Dolls
The Killing (Kubrick)

Let 'em swivel.

P.S. I watched WALL-E again last night upon my own recommendation. It may deserve to be even higher on the list, it's a genuine fvcking masterpiece from start to finish.

You won't regret it, I promise. See here for thoughts on the movie put more eloquently than I ever could (sorry for any spoilers below):

And this love letter to the film:
[Link]

There is so much going on in this movie:

The allegory of Eve carrying the future of humanity in her "belly".
The mindless consumer and a parable on the power of consumerism.
The modern disassociation from the natural world.
The loss of indigenous peoples' shared memories.
The bravery of almost half of the film being a silent, slapstick film.
The concept of the value of things, with humans learning from robots.
The simple illusion of what we consider alive to be.
The power of memory, be it human, collective or digital storage.

I don't want to over-hype it for you, but fvck me, it is a sensational piece of film-making IMHO, and in fact one of the most romantic movies ever made. I believe it should have at the very least been nominated for Best Picture in 2009.

Your average animated kids movie, this is not; yet somehow, every kid from 3-13 i've seen watch it (sorry, been staring at kids again) is totally and utterly enthralled by it. Quite the feat.

P.S. Very interested to see what you get from it, Nick. Apart from a hard on.

Apocalypse Now

Still a quality film. Looks great. Redux may have been a little bit too long but was still a good addition.

Some like it hot

The most fun you can have for an hour and a half. Loads of harmless and innocent fun

Godfather (one and two)

Terrific films. Still remarkably engaging.

Citizen Kane

Such a revolutionary film for its time. How they had to do some of the camera work (which today looks easy) is incredible. And a brilliant brilliant story line.

La Haine

I watched ADF do a live soundtrack to this a couple of years ago and it added to the passion that this film has. Such a good film -- best of the last 10 years I reckon!

You're talking classic films here, rather than the contemporary popular fare most have quoted on this thread. I think there is a world of these high class classic films that most on this site probably haven't seen. The likes of Guy Ritchie and Tarantino aren't fit to even tie the shoe laces of the late great Billy Wilder or Orsen Wells when it comes to film directing.
