There is so much going on in this movie:

The allegory of Eve carrying the future of humanity in her "belly".
The mindless consumer and a parable on the power of consumerism.
The modern disassociation from the natural world.
The loss of indigenous peoples' shared memories.
The bravery of almost half of the film being a silent, slapstick film.
The concept of the value of things, with humans learning from robots.
The simple illusion of what we consider alive to be.
The power of memory, be it human, collective or digital storage.

I don't want to over-hype it for you, but fvck me, it is a sensational piece of film-making IMHO, and in fact one of the most romantic movies ever made. I believe it should have at the very least been nominated for Best Picture in 2009.

Your average animated kids movie, this is not; yet somehow, every kid from 3-13 i've seen watch it (sorry, been staring at kids again) is totally and utterly enthralled by it. Quite the feat.

P.S. Very interested to see what you get from it, Nick. Apart from a hard on.

You're talking classic films here, rather than the contemporary popular fare most have quoted on this thread. I think there is a world of these high class classic films that most on this site probably haven't seen. The likes of Guy Ritchie and Tarantino aren't fit to even tie the shoe laces of the late great Billy Wilder or Orsen Wells when it comes to film directing.
