I reckon this must be the mid-eighties you are talking about, jel. We must've stood shoulder to shoulder on many an occasion in the Arthur. You've described it perfectly. Good times. Never to be repeated, alas.

You must have been standing next to me a few times then Kerms...

I appeared in the now defunct Today newspaper hanging off the Arfur barrier giving it my best Delia 'lets have it' as those w***ers from Birmingham tried to get at us dressed as carrots

Like a turkey that was the one game of the season I missed and regret it to this day, Sash. I was on holiday with me Aussie bird at the time. Turkey aptly.

One of my greatest memories standing in the old school Arthur was Madden's penalty in the Blackburn play off match.

He scored at the Sainsbury's end; froze for a second; then made his way to us in the Arthur, finger aloft. Hundreds of us (it felt) suddenley surged towards him, almost like someone had pulled the plug and we were all sucked down towards him. I loved that man. I don't think there's been a bigger Palace cult hero who played such few games for the club.

Madden, as Sir Steve pointed out, could and should have been such a player.

I remember going up to Leeds one snowy Tuesday through a blizzard(I think we won 1-0) and he just ran the game fromn start to finish...brilliant performance

Get in the man love queue, Bubbs. Probably the best midfielder - bar maybe Lombardo - Palace ever had. It was criminal the way Coppell used him so sparingly. And we all know why.

The Mod Madden was a hero in a very short space of time. Me, my dad and my grandad all raved about him.

Optimistic as ever

I miss the Arthur didnt the away fans have the seats above but towards the away corner?.It was the best place to watch football at Palace good atmosphere and a decent view(Pillars exscused)i miss the old arthur more than any woman.

The away fans did sit behind us. I remember a Millwall visit and Danny Baker in the front row seat behind me.To the less tutored eye it could have appeared that he was orchestrating the aggro.

One Brighton home match I took an American mate in with me. The previous Autumn he'd taken me to the Shea Stadium for a Mets baseball match. Seemed only right to show him how we did things. He had a look of terror on his face all afternoon.

Celery Celery....
