When comparing the merits of the many fine keepers who
have served Palace in the last 60-odd years account must be taken of the conditions prevailing when they played.

Old 'uns will remember John Jackson as not only an extremely reliable and agile keeper but also as a very brave one. In his day, keepers were fair game for any challenge in the air and many were often bundled into their net still clutching the ball from an aerial 'shoulder charge' Nowadays they are well protected (some say over protected) so this element in the art of keeping goal is not now relevant.

The only criticism I have of today's keepers is their tendency to go for high balls with one leg agressively outstretched as a deterrent. This should not be allowed.

So I'd put Jackson ahead of Martyn with Bill Glazier a close third in the rankings. Not forgetting Vic Rouse
a capable goalie who was capped for Wales while playing for Palace - but even I didn't see him that much.

There is nothing new about keepers leading with their knee when catching high balls. Reg Davies had it down to a fine art.

Vic Rouse was a great keeper until the 4th winning goal at Villa in the FA cup undermined his confidence. Jackson was the best though.

lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright.

In the promotion season against Gillingham, Hudson gave away a penalty and was sent off. Berthelin saved it, then we went right up the other end and Butterfield scored. Lives long in the memory.

Nico Vaesen save one on one against Zamora in play-off final with score still at 0-0.

The out-stretched save from Steve Lomas and also Michael Carrick were also very good.

vaeson was out of this world that game...save after save.

IMHO jules wont ever come ahead of martyn.

big nige was a class or two above jules...and proved it at the top level for almost 20 years.
