a steward? a f***ing steward?

this just gets better and better.

She was an upperclass steward working the boxes she claimed!

if she was such a high flying , high earning city worker why the fcuk did she have to work on a saturday down at selhurst , walter mitty .!!

I would think it was in order to pay off her £31,015 worth of debts!

Edited to add the £15

Have you ever considered flouncing, Jo?

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Sad to read, Seth, but nobody forced her to fvck up things with her fiancee. Kinda explains the FH situation though. She had already done a long stretch fobbing people off. Habits die hard.

True nobody forced her, but addiction is an illness not a lifestyle choice (cue 17 pages arguing the toss over this).

I also have addictive tendencies and know how difficult it can be to stop behaving in ways that are both self-destructive and self-satisfying. When the urge takes you, it can be hell's teeth to resist.

I can understand that re:alcohol, heroin and some other things that one can become both physically and psychologically dependent on but shoes????

It's not shoes, but shopping. Acquiring stuff, spending money. Produces the same feel-good chemicals as gambling or sex.

Is it fair to say though there is a sliding scale of 'choice' dependent on which addiction has you in its grip? A chronic alcoholic has NO choice but to drink when they are too far gone, I believe, for example. Whereas I knew someone who was addicted to the gym but still managed to choose to go to work, have a social life, etc.

Do shopaholics still partly choose that lifestyle/addiction even when in the grip I think is what I am trying to say? Is it much worse than smoking?

All addicts, being humans, are different. It's wrong to generalise too much, but a true addiction, whatever it is to, is characterised by an uncontrollable compulsion to behave in a certain way, despite any negative consequences which may result.

This definition may help:

"Addiction is a persistent, compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance. The term has been partially replaced by the word dependence for substance abuse. Addiction has been extended, however, to include mood-altering behaviors or activities.

Some researchers speak of two types of addictions: substance addictions (for example, alcoholism, drug abuse, and smoking); and process addictions (for example, gambling, spending, shopping, eating, and sexual activity). There is a growing recognition that many addicts, such as polydrug abusers, are addicted to more than one substance or process."
