Wasn't it also him who scored them two corkers at wolves in the fa cup? I remember one wedging in the top corner?!!!! I got so wet that game - not from rain, but because I was watching on the telly in the student union (along with several Wolves fans) and every time we scored I jumped up, forgetting about the full pint I was holding each time!
........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history..................... |

Well im glad it wasnt just me, and he is actually remembered for being a quality player! When you actually think back he scored some great goals, in abundence too, lots already mentioned... Pompey hatrick, the diving header, the goal against Millwall (think we won 1-0..?), a couple of good finishes at birmingham (won 4-2), that goal against barnsley after a few seconds (i always thought it was against boro?!!), the couple he got against everton which i think was our first premier league win that year away at goodison, and of course the man u semi at villa park. Many others too, including the 2 at wolves as shown on the link... class. Definately someone that we shouldnt forget too easily. His most prolific season was obviously our div 1 winning one, but like aj he carried that form into the prem too. Did he ever get a look in for any england friendlies back then??
Hillsboro... Sheffield Weds 2 - 2 Palace. WHAT a day! |

Correct me if I am mistaken but when Cantona went to court in Croydon I thought that Chris Armstrong went as a witness.

I used to love chris armstrong we brought him from millwall for 1m his 1st goals for palace was @ everton away we won 2-0 & he was very very quick . Got a great story about him @ the start of the 93/94 season we played fulham away pre season I was there & the palace coach turned up as chris got off he was holding his boots & for some reason I asked chris if I could touch his boots so he let me that day we won 5-0 chris got a hat- trick. Then @ birmingham away in September I asked in the warm up to touch his boot & he let me palace won 4-2 with chris scoring then month later @ WBA away in the warm up chris come over to the palace fans signing peoples programes I asked to touch his boot again cause when I did @ fulham he got 3 so he let me & in the 2nd half he scored again palace won 4-1. So @ Barnsley away in November in the warm I called chris over & he remembered me he said go on then touch my boot in a joke kind of way. I touched his boot the game kicked off 9 seconds later the ball was in the back of the net chris coming running over to us & celebrated the goal by hugging us & on the season video you can just see him cuddling me & palace won 3-1. The chant that day to Barnsley fans was " are you in England in disguise " after San Marino had scored against England after 7 seconds. Chris went on to score some great goals that season I remember the game against Portsmouth @ Selhurst some great goals palace winning 5-1 millwall @ home 1-0 great goal what a seaon the 93/94 was he did go to tottenham in the end for I think 4.5 m & later on failed a drug test think he got caught smoking the green. Great player & like you said hardly ever mentioned I always have & always will put chris Armstrong up there with wright, bright & aj that is an awesome story! I never gave CA the credit he - in retrospect - does deserve. Yes I thought he was a good striker at the time but I was judging all strikers against Ian Wright, which was in hindsight an impossible benchmark. Looking back he was a quality player for us, it was a pity that he angled so overtly for a move at the end, but he was a top class striker and he wasn't going to hang around with us in the Championship. Would be nice to have him back at SP one day as a guest or something.
too far gone.. aint no way back this post was sponsored by fubar.com |

I bumped into him at Wembley... Which is a bar in Playa Del Ingles, in the summer before his move to Spurs, I got him to sign a shirt and let him buy me a drink. I also met Lee Sinnot over there, got him to help mop the bar I was looking after at the time, very helpful these old Palace players.
