Well there are a number who you could say are our best ever in terms of ability.. however the player I admire most is Julian Speroni. He has been consistently among our best players once he made the starting team. He stuck around through administration and has never let transfer speculation effect his play, consummate professional. And it's great to see a south American making his home in London rather than struggling with home sickness like many others we see in the Premier league.

For football ability, style and skill it has to be Attilio Lombardo.

For my favourite player its...... Geoff Thomas. His 100% effort, everywhere on the pitch but had great ability to go with it and not forgetting his captaincy.

This is so difficult to narrow down to one player. There have been so many heroes over the last 54 years for me.
If I have to pick just one it will have to be Jim Cannon.
He was, or at least gave the impression that he was, absolutely committed to the cause.

One incident that, for me, epitomised this was away to Leicester late in our div 2 championship year 1978/79.
We were trailing 0-1 late in the game, and things were very tight at the top of the table, when "Doris" Hinshelwood bundled the ball over the line in a packed 6 yard box.
JImbo stood there with both fists clenched,an absolute snarl of emotion on his face, with a shout of yeeeeeeessss! that lasted for seconds.
Jesus how I loved that man.

An amusing (for me) anecdote relating to same game.

Early on in the proceedings my good mate Keith (Nettletoneagle on here) got shat on by a pigeon perched up in the rafters. We moved, and a bit later he got shat on again. We moved and........ , well you`ve guessed it.
Sorry Keith, but I feel people should know this.

Sorry to drawl on and all folks, but I have been on the weed tonight.

Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link]

Without doubt the greatest pre-war although Peter Simpson's record speaks for itself.

Longevity does have to play a part in my opinion and quite how Lombaardo fits in to that is beyond me. On his day he was a superb player but he turned out 43 times for us and scored 8 goals which does not elevate him to Palace greatness. Also he only really performed at home, when we were away he went missing that is a fact and a cause of deep frustration for the coaching staff at the time. AJ and Aki were good servants and good workhorses but great? No.

lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright.

Apologies Byrne was of course post war and Simpson pre-war!

He was in a decent West Ham youth team - so could probably play.

Only been supporting 45 years and it's difficult. Loved watching Hilaire. Jim Cannon as has been said a real rock. Ian Wright a sensational goal scorer BUT I have to go for Kenny Sansom - the number of times I saw an opposition winger running with ball and suddenly stopping because KS had taken it cleanly away from him without even touching the player. Impeccable timing in the tackle.

Dad worked as ambulance man, 90% of his working life.
Met my mum, he lived in Hoxton & moved to Croydon to marry her.
Anyway , not being from round here & pre-media coverage he went to the ground to collect a player injured training.
Budgie was not amused he didn't know who he was.

Anyway, I've watched Palace since 60s.
Yogi hughes was a proper character, but tough question.
A bit like favourite song, it'll change week to week.
Don rogers or wrighty for me.
(well tonight anyway)
vince next week.

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.
