In my youth various Palace players used to train sides in the Shirley & district league. Steve Kember did Shirley Saints ,Swindle did a side in Roundshaw. Our side, for a few weeks had Keith Whalley !(he was having a fiddle with a mates sister). Just wondered if there are more?

Yes, I go back a bit earlier and the team I was with in the late 60's was coached by Tony Taylor and a rival team was run by Gerry Queen.

10-11 years ago my Sunday league team(u15s) had a few Palace youth players come and coach us. I was goalie so had sessions with Lance Cronin, really nice bloke.

Probably late 80's I played in a very good Sunday League side who swept all before them pretty much and we drew a team from Keston about 2 Divisions below us in the Cup who were coached by Dave Swindlehurst.

I cant remember the score but do recall we murdered them but it was great to see Swindle in his trackie muttering under his breath and throwing his arms up in despair as the ball kept flying in to the net.

I can remember that,I coached Waddon United in the 80s and Derek Millen,Keith Millen's dad was in charge of Selsdon Juniors,I believe, where Southgate started.
John Salako was playing for Eversleigh Rangers,as I recall.

Back in the early 80's, Steve Lovell came to my Primary School and took a few training sessions with us. Despite being somewhat of a fringe player, it still felt like George Best himself had graced us with his prescence. God only knows what I would've done had it been Vince Hilaire...

Do kids still have that same awe about pro's now as we did then? I really did think they were bloody Gods or something. Now, age and cynicism means I'm rarely impressed with any of them and can't help but pick faults in them all.

When I was a Councillor I worked on the Football In The Community scheme, partly funded by the Council and the Club, with players like Lovell,Simon Rodger,Simon Osborn,Dean Gordon and many others.

I think it was a great success and was extended into to Lambeth.

But,as touched on by you Bubbs, things are different now but way back then it became a little difficult with the success of our Cup Final appearance and 3rd place in Div 1,

The senior players,as they then became, didn't have that amount of time on their hands as there were many other different obligations,so they were not as available as they once were.
