I also believe that the "MR X" was John Byrom of Bolton and I think he guested for us in a Friday night friendly at home to PSV Eindhoven in early 1971 in which we were well beaten. Our immediate form after this match was awful and we fell down the table like a stone.
I have this sad ability to remember football from the early 70's as if it was yesterday. Ask me results from the last 10 years and I am easily confused!!

I am exactly the same - From about 1992 ish its all a blur

It was Malcolm X but he was tragically shot just before he was about to sign for Palace.

This was a tragedy as Malcolm had a goal a game strike rate and fantastic assists/tackle ratio.

Yeah, he was quite a good target man.

Could be Bobby Moore, Bert tried to sign him once.

I remember that rumour racing round the infant playground - back end of 1970, I think.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand!

I haven't checked this thread out for a while but this question has really puzzled me but Pop Robson does jog my memory now, as it goes, it could well be him as I recall him being touted around.

It wasn't Bobby Moore, I'm pretty damn sure of that!!

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................
