...Palace made it to the top of the old English First Division by beating Ipswich 3-1 at Selhurst Park. It was a day I'll never forget.

As much as I love Palace I don't think it will ever happen again...

Supporting Crystal Palace since 19.45 on 29th August 1972 (approximately)!

We beat Ipswich 4-1. I think we had 12 points from 8 games (2 points for a win) and had won 4 and drawn 4

Yes it was 4-1 and I went with a pal who was an Ipswich fan. He thought they were lucky to escape with that scoreline!

If anyone else remembers the same as I do then it was the 'Gerry Francis' match. The guy was just immense, he ran the entire game, controlled everything with perfect tackles, passes and positioning. Probably the best individual performance by any player I have ever seen.

We truly believed that great things were in store at that moment in time. Alas history proves us all totally wrong!

I haven't forgotten that goal.

Ipswich corner headed clear at near post by Sansom to edge of our box, Hilaire collected it and turned quickly, hit a pass down the left wing to Flanagan who had moved wide into space, he advanced down the left and hit a cross to edge of their box and Jim Cannon appeared from nowhere and volleyed it right footed into the back of their net.

Best goal I have ever seen.

Jim Cannon scored the 4th goal, the one that put us top, from a Gerry Francis cross - he was amazing!
