...Palace made it to the top of the old English First Division by beating Ipswich 3-1 at Selhurst Park. It was a day I'll never forget.

As much as I love Palace I don't think it will ever happen again...

I think you might have forgotten a goal

I stand corrected! Palace won 4-1, and I do remember Gerry Francis - former England and Palace captain!

Supporting Crystal Palace since 19.45 on 29th August 1972 (approximately)!

Great day - was there.

Just take a look at the Arthur Wait in that picture of Jimbo hitting the volley - mobbed. What memories eh!!

I would sell my first born to see some footage from that game.

Just our luck that ITV was off air at that time due to a technicians strike. Sure LWT would've shown the game otherwise. Can almost here Brian Moore's voice booming 'CANNON! AND THAT'S FOUR!'

Wonder what games MOTD showed that weekend instead of ours?

Just checked it: they showed Forest 1 Liverpool 0 which is understandable, but followed it up with a 'gigantic' clash from Division 3 - Sheff U 3 Oxford 1.....that's made me feel a whole lot better

Mind you Bubbs I like that - before all this Sky and PL nonsense you could get, on both channels a MOTD that might have Liverpool v Wolves and Oxford v Huddersfield or the BM model which would have the game of the week, regardless of Division from your area witg the best games from the other regions so you might see us in Div 3 v Grimsby as the main game as much as you would see Tottenham or Chelsea, from teh North a Notts Co v Sheff Utd without a Man Utd or Liverpook in sight with the likes of John Helm or Hugh Johns as commentators..

I would still love to see that Ipswich game though - the memories would just fly back - one of the best Palace performances EVER

Oh I totally agree. We got a few appearances that way in those dark early 80's days: Wolves at home (lost 4-3) and Man C away (lost 2-1) spring to mind.

Remember it so well. Palace going to top, and I went off to college supporting England's top side. The England Manager of the time even announced that he was going to base the England team around players from the 4 top sides - Palace, Liverpool, Man U & Arsenal. We were the team of the eighties.

( After note. By the time I finished college, we were sliding I to the third division. )

For some reason there is an incident in that game that I always remember (aside from Jim's magnificent volley). I was standing on the Holmesdale and Ipswich were attacking that end in the 2nd half (not very much mind you).

At one point Paul Mariner, Ipswich's centre forward, broke through into the Palace penalty area but somehow or other tripped over his own feet and landed flat on his face. He lay face down for a couple of seconds appearing to have injured himself. The Holmesdale crowd, to a man, broke into cheers and jeers, at which point Mariner jumped to his feet, looked up to the crowd with a smile on his face and tapped his nose as if to say "fooled you".

I think the reason this has stuck with me is because, apart from goal celebrations, it is very rare during the course of play for a player to interact with the crowd in any way. Mariner's response showed a nice touch of humour.
