Hamas owes America, the UK and France a great many thanks for ousting the Mubarak regime in Egypt. It feels quite justifiably emboldened to act irrationally and provoke Israel into a war.

Mubarak was a Western ally and critically, he knew how to curtail the Muslim Brotherhood (of which Hamas is an offshoot). Their plans are to restore an Islamist caliphate over the entire M-E and then into Europe. (They openly admit to that)

Israel did not ask for this war, but popular sentiment is that it needs to deal a fatal blow to Hamas and their sponsors.

They do this every few years. Kill scores of civilian Palestinians - a lot of them childen - in retaliation for two or three deaths on their side in the guise of fighting terror.

It suits them to murder. Keeps the status quo. It also perpetuates hatred. So the wheel is ever turning. Fvcked up in the head government in Tel Aviv. Rabin was the last reasonable one in power. His own side murdered him. Because he wanted to make things better.

An axis of evil.

Not quite true Kerms. Rockets are routinely fired onto Israels civilians and given that all of Israels neighbours are quite open in their desire to wipe Israel and Israelis off the map and Israel are quite prepared to act quickly and not really worred about whats proportionate and whats not to try and apportion 'blame' when anything kicks off is pretty moot imho.

Israels backing by the US, its disregard for territorial rights dont do anything to help the situation either nor does the rhetoric about martyrs and martyrdom and sabre rattling from Hamas at every opportunity

A conflict that will never end in our lifetime

There is also a general election coming up. The secret of blowing up your Palestinian neighbours is timing.

As neighbours go the front wheelers have the national equivilants of the Wests, Mugabes and Kyles next door so how anyone cant take 'sides' in what is a total ball of s***e is beyond me.

Given the track record of treatment the jews have I can see how they are a might touchy

The threat from rockets is overplayed by Israel. The total fatalities from rocket and mortar attacks since 2001 is 61 and prior to the killing of Ahmed Jabari there had been no fatalities since August 2011.

Most of the rocket attacks are currently coming from the Gaza Strip where there is a high population density and thus rockets are fired from residential areas. The Palestinian territories (Gaza Strip & West Bank) are 15th in the mostly densely populated territories according to the UN.

I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like.

Heavy handed yes. Any country that comes under repeated rocket attacks is likely to strike back at some point but I think they have made their point.

...but then doesn't any country or people that have had their land stolen have every right to launch rocket attacks?

I don't remember us asking Kuwait to sit tight after Iraq invaded.

All of which is irrelevant - If Plaid Hamas were firing the odd banger into Bristol from Cardiff who would give a monkeys whether it was 6,61 or 610 fatalities in the last couple of years, you would want it stopped by any means necessary

Its the act not the score that is relevant for Israel.

Its almost got to the point where the Israelis now have to over react - any sign of 'weakness' just cant be shown

Unless both sides fundamentally shift their positions then nothing is ever going to change

Over the boarder from Israel, in Syria, there is a civil war which has claimed literally tens of thousands of lives. But nobody is bothered.

Yet when Israel has enough of Hamas (fascists) provoking, the hand wringing begins. If you lived in Israel, would you want your government to do nothing to stop missile attacks? As firing missiles at cities is an offensive act of war....Hamas can hardly play the victim on this.

I find it ironic that everyone keeps banging on about
"Israels neighbours are quite open in their desire to wipe Israel and Israelis off the map" but isn't that exactly what Israel is doing to the Palestianians?"

Just because you dont fawn over the poor oppressed Palestinians it doesnt automatically make you a supporter of Israel.

The fact Israel has enemies on all sides of its border does give a wee clue to understanding their (over) reaction and hard arsed stance though surely ????
