FA Cup quarter final: Sunderland 0 Palace 1 (Whittle). Absolutely freezing day, with travel chaos. But great memories.
Unfortunately the cup run messed up the league form and we missed out on promotion.

I am pleased to say I was there and can confirm that it was an absolute ball freezer of a day. Well worth the long round trip though. Somewhat scary coming out but we got away unscathed, helped by putting on a long face and not wearing any "colours".

Missing out on promotion was a real anti-climax as was that defeat to Southampton in the semi-final.

The Roker Roar...fcuk me that was loud

Roker Park was the only time in 46 years that I've had a knife pulled on me at a match. Fortunately got away safely, great result.

Yep went to Roker Park as a 13 yr old with my step-Dad and future Brother-in-law.It was the coldest I'd ever been and the furthest away game I'd been to and still is! IIRC was the train delayed? "Five-foot-two,eyes of blue,Alan Whittle's after you...."Also done Leeds (got chased through town and ran into paper-shop past the counter and out the back ) and Liverpool (Step-Dad and co. had punch-up in a sports shop after being chased through town!). There was a lot of aggro in those days, great cup run tho'. Ollie's Dad,Ash

step dad and future bro in law - from Norfolk was he ???

[Yea remember it well , our train was delayed we got there late and went straight into the Rocker end what was surposed to be for away fans but quite a few Sunderland fans in there gunning for us. Most Palace fans seemed to be in along the side that day. Remember coming out of the ground singing " Rocker roar is no more " Happy days ! Had quite a bit of bovver up at the Leeds game to. As I remember there was about three special trains went up there that day ! I remember feeling very relieved to see Denny Warren getting on our train as we left Kings cross ! In fact I think he was a steward on the train for that game ! Plenty of action after the game though when Leeds tried to attack our buses taking us back to the station :=)

Yea mate we were already chanting Eagles before we was relegated to Div 3 ! I can remember us chanting Eagles big time at the away game in Swindon that sent us down. we were on their end and held it all through the game :=) Most of the chants in those days were used by all fans with just the ords changed to suit your own team " We hate Nottingham forest we hate Livepool to we hate Man utd but Palace we love you " We went up to Wolves we took the North bank we went up to Highbury they aint worth a w*** , so take my advice theres nothing so nice as kicking the f*** out of ( whoever ) " I think Palace fans were the only ones to sing the old Borstal song though " I found an old handbag "

Quote shannegraney7 at 06 Mar 2013 11.52pm

What songs were the palace fans singing at this time lads? And did you chant Eagles by then because we had only been nicknamed that for 3 years. I could ask my 55yr old dad this when i go to his in croydon on sat for the game but just interested to hear from other 'older' palace fans too, sorry about the older bit
