I'll always be thankful for her part in taking down Socialism in the UK and elsewhere.

You should really thank the labour party, during the early 80s they went on a 'rampage' expelling members of militant and the far left factions of the labour party. As soon as it became apparent that Militant was a growing threat to the status quo of the Labour party Kinnock and the reformers were ruthless in their purge.

Contry to popular belief Labour did far more to eliminate socialism from main stream politics than the Conservatives.

Very true they realised Maggie knew what she was doing was right for the country.

I think once governments separate the good of the country from what is good for the people of the country they have essentially crossed a dangerous line into the 'greater good'. Whilst a section of society were accumulating great wealth, she could have raised high end income taxes to rejuvenate the areas that suffered as a result of closed mines and industry (which is what Hessletine wanted to do).

In fact she didn't she cut public spending in order to pay for tax cuts, and promoted a deliberate policy that increased disparity, and promoted policys that could only result in greater suffering.

Having broken the back of the unions, she was remorseless for its members that were left broke, unemployed in areas devastated by rampant unemployment.

I think there's a certain validity to this. She did need to move on manufacturing, she did need to break the unions as they weren't going to be reasonable and were far too strong.....I don't believe even the moderates in the Labour party would have done either.

However, she should have let Heseltine have his head at regeneration. Also while she had principles she created an economy where the least principled could make a lot of money.

Its not so much the closing down, its the manner in which they were closed down, and the population, few of whom voted conservative, were just left to deal with the fact that employment was ripped out almost overnight, leaving hundreds chasing single jobs.

I can fully understand that those who spent the 80s in the coalfields, shipyards and industrial 'North' are unlikely to remember the great lady with much affection but one suspects that many of them will be appalled by the crude and sheer tastleless comments of those of the left.

I have NO time whatsoever for the likes of Livingstone, Scargill etc but if they passed away I would not stoop to the level of those shameful reprobates who are rejoicing in the death of Baroness Thatcher.Utterly repulsive and repugnant.

I found her friendship with Pinochet very tasteless and her damning of Nelson Mandela as "a terrorist" incredibly crude.

People have such short memories.
I recall the power of the Shop Stewards and the so-called Fathers of the Chapel hollering "Everybody Out" at the occasion when a union member was threatened with the sack over a clear disciplinary breach. This, coupled with the Closed Shop practice in the Docks and the print made us uncompetitive.
I also remember days in the early 70s when we all had 3 or 4 hours of electricity a day at work.(there was some kind of timetable when the power was available. )I was working in an office and used Camping Gaz lamps and pen and paper.
No wonder we were the laughing stock of the world.

The good of the country, is not always the same as what is good for the people of that Country.

Latest example is the austerity measures, the individual will think they are crap I know I do, but it has to happen for the good of the countries economy as a whole. We simply could not have gone on as we were, oh and on the subject of money, you know that rebate we still get from Europe who was Champion for that cause? Ted heath? Tony Benn? Tony Blair even…..not effin likely.

Another mug who has been fooled by the debt defecit narrative. For another thread perhaps, but the country is no worse off than it has been for many many years. Tis just a ruse by the Tories to cut public services.
Even if we believe the lie, how come we were able to build housing and get the economy going again, when debts were much higher, post ww2?

Danny, don't take it to heart, socialists always find it hard to conduct a decent argument without bringing down the tone and directing personal insults.

I have to say I am rather disappointed that those two titanic Thatcherites - Funty and Hoof - have not entered the arena.

It wasn't a personal insult, that would imply it was directed at one person. It was actually at all those who don't look beyond the news and are happily spoonfed by it.

Na, don't agree, some of the stuff said and having parties over a death are way out of line. Should have some level of respect regardless of politics.

As a teacher they would get after school detention from me.
