She sold off our industry and spunked the money.

What industry? we were sodding well bankrupt (all but)!

Yes she privatised British Gas etc but that's hardly selling off our industry. British Steel was shagged with Labour only keeping Steel works open for political reasons.

You make me laugh, you moan about people believing the media but all you post is soundbites

Public debt in the 80's was below 50% of GDP, the EU set the maximum at 60% when Thatch signed the Maastricht treaty in 92, so by European terms we were well within acceptable limits. Hardly bankrupt. In fact, we embarked on building the welfare state when our debt was 247% of GDP after ww2, so that is a weak argument.

1970s
IMF Crisis - .9 Billion
Devaluation of the pound - potential .9 billion loan from the yanks
three day week
Power cuts
Red Robbo £200 million in lost production due to walkouts in a little over a year.
British Steel haemorrhaging money - over £800 million during the 70s, but that's OK because it kept the northerners happy.

Yep, evertything was just dandy when maggie took over.

But as you rightly say Nick in the 80s things were much better, I am glad that you acknowledge that

We were not bankrupt, which was your assertion.

Another unforgivable act from Thatcher's time: Allowing the targeting of underage drinkers so that big business could get some of that teenage disposable income.

Absolute and utter Balderdash.

I've heard of Absolute. But not Utter Balderdash. Was that the pink fizzy one?

After Mrs T. resigned, she asked for an honour; not for herself but for Dennis, who became a Baronet in 1991.

Interestingly, he is the last person outside of the royal family to be granted a hereditary honour. This obviously passed on to Mark on Dennis's death, so another member of the House of Lords who gets lost easily (though with most Lords this only occurs because of senility).

All but isnt even close though is it? Historically our debt to GDP ratio was (and still is) a lot lower than it has been for the last 250 years. So even to say all but bankrupt is complete tosh. The same bankrupt lie is being peddled by politicians of all parties now.

True, but the signs of recovery started in the years prior to the conservative victory anyhow. The ability of governments to direct ecconomy's is very limited.

Almost certainly the next government inherited an ecconomic situation in recovery, from an all time low (which had affected labour and conservative governments). You talk about 'saving the country millions with British steel' but that doesn't include the social costs or the financial costs of benefits. Peoples whole lives were essentially ruined, and thats why people who regard life as being more than a cheap fiscal value didn't like her. Her policys ripped apart British communities creating unemployment black spots across the country, and offerig nothing but a life on benefits in return.

People on here criticise Cameron when he blames the last Labour government for the s*** storm we are in as they claim he has had plenty of time (less than three years) to sort it all out.

On the other hand, 23 years after Maggie left office it is still acceptable to blame her for all the ills of our society.

That's because her decade in office led to the realignment of British politics and a shifting of the centre of gravity to the right, hence Blair and the continuation of her legacy under New Labour. Brown was unlucky enough to be holding the ball when the wheels came off, but the fact that the Tories couldn't capitalise electorally demonstrates that people know that we'd still be in the mire whoever had been in office, because (despite all the Punch and Judy stuff across the Despatch Box) the three main parties occupy very similar (centre-right) ground and are competing on managerial competence. We're stuck with this for years to come, unfortunately.

Because Maggie was so unsusseful?

I think the word you were looking for is insufferable ...
Either that or you are Stanley Unwin and I claim my £25.
