For sheer electric atmosphere it has to be a thirty-way tie between all the Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy gigs I saw between 81-84. For quality Iggy Pop in Brixton.

The Horrors at Reading last year were absolutely f***ing insane. That's gotta be up there.

The Cribs at the Astoria and Arctic Monkeys at Brixton Academy were also nothing short of a-f***ing-mazing.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen at a live gig was in 1978 at what was then called the Music Machine in Camden. I was there as a guest of one of the support bands, but the headliners were the Boomtown Rats. There was a staircase at either side of the stage, and up the one on the right (as you looked at it) was a VIP bar area, where liggers could have a few away from the unwashed punters who were there to actually see the bands.
Anyway, halfway through The Rats set, with Geldoff giving his best Jagger inpersonation and the rats trying to sound like the E-Street Band, this rather hefty looking gent blagged his way past the security keeping the plebs from the VIP area, climbed his way to the top of the stairs and somehow sauntered onto the stage, whereupon he walked up to Geldoff and gave him one almighty smack in the chops, then calmly walked off the other side of the stage as if this were an everyday occurrance. After regaining his balance and recovering from the shock, Mr "Give us yor f8cking money" gamely carried on with the set, his green and white striped shirt covered in claret.
His assailant was soundly thumped by the bouncers for his trouble, but I know several people who would've put up with that for the chance to wallop the pasty faced knob from Dun Loaghoire.

By a country mile it had to be
Jimi Hendrix at the Chislehurst Caves, in
if I remember correctly 1967. Saw him do the whole act, playing the guitar behind his back, left and right handed, and with his teeth, as well as making it sound fantastic just kicking it round the stage floor!
Also heard him at the Star Hotel in West Croydon
shortly before that, but crowded out and couldnt see much from the back.

:-)

The power of the Executive to cast a man into prison without formulating any charge known to the law, and particularly to deny him the judgment of his peers, is in the highest degree odious and is the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist.
