Was a great day out that match...I trust you remember the surge behind the goal when they scored, that was a pretty amazing sight that you won't ever see again. We took a fair few thousand. Was one hell of a long journey but worth every hour. Those were the days....

I always remember my first trip to St James Park. 1988 FA Cup. Lost 1- 0 to one of the best goals I have seen. A 30 yard screamer from Gazza who also sayd it's one of his best goals too. 11 hours coach trip each way was worth every minute, and we should have been 1 up but for a rather dubious decision from a rather biased ref. The ground was being developed at the time so the view was not great, but I witnessed the famous Newcastle surge when they scored. The home end surged forward like a wave of people and was something I will always remember. My last memory of the game was at the end of the match when your announcer congratulated us on our performance and said he looked forward to seeing us again next year when we go up...nice touch that would never happen these days. Oh happy days..... and one of the reasons why I will always have a soft spot for Newcastle. Happy memories! I always say that was the best goal I saw against Palace. That was on my 19th birthday too - old git now......

Very pleased that you enjoyed your trip to Selhurst - no doubt made even better by the result ! Thanks also for the tips re Sunderland...not sure if I'm doing that one yet, but I'm definitely going to Newcastle the week after and staying over on the Saturday night. Looking forward to sampling the nightlife. Here's hoping we're playing one another next season.... I sincerely hope so, hope you enjoy your trip up to Newcastle, old git myself now, so nightlife for me now invariably ends in more sedate bars but will try and get some recommendations for you all.

I've been a few times,mainly in the corner very high up. Last time was nearly behind goal but again over 200 steps to get up and then another 50 or so to get to my seat which was at back. Additionally it is one of the steepest inclines at any ground, which I suspect was the steepest you could get away with Health and Safety. I am no longer a season ticket holder so i move around the ground and often end up in the gods near the away fans, Level 7, i take your point, oxygen should be available after you move up from base camp. Mind the steepest away end and scariest for me was Barcelona -standing as well (ooh look at me i've been to Barca lol).

I have a theory this was one of the reasons football was so well supported in the North in particular, it was somewhere to go on a Saturday afternoon when the pubs closed at 3 and reopened at 5.30.

Nice post Jarrowmag, glad you had a great day down here. Shame about the non stop p!ssing rain that day as it does dampen the atmosphere in the ground too, especially in the front rows where people get soaking wet. I'm going up on Saturday and have been looking forward to this for a while. Our plan is to get to Newcastle and stay there till 2:30 giving us time to sample the triple vodkas for a pound each. Do those still exist up there by the way? Hope we can get a result against the Mackems then come back for a heroes welcome after the game with the Geordies. Massive game for both of us. Trebles for a quid, back in the day we used to drink treble trebles in Bar 42 - started the night off well. Our theory was the more you drink the more you save.Not sure if they still exist but when my student son gets out of bed i will ask. I would recommend The Gate complex - canny few bars which will have a good mix of locals/stags/hens/students - Sam Jacks has a mechanical bull, Bar Beyond has dancing girls etc a little bit of something for everyone. Near the train station you could nip into Gotham Town or the Irish Bar O'Neils (i think), probably be band on for Paddy's weekend. Hope you have a cracking trip - if you out on the night time, out of the train station to the right is the diamond mile, lots of good bars like Revolution (some good cheap bars like Wetherspoons) - out to the left of train station is The Pink Triangle, ok for a laugh but would not want pass out there lol. The Quayside at Newcastle is good, you also ave The Bigg Market which can get a bit laity. As it is now above ten degrees everyone will be dressed for summer.

Had only ever seen Newcastle play and lose against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park - 3 occasions i think and the atmosphere was abysmal from the home fans (which somehow made the defeats more galling). So was not expecting too much in December, but what a trip, a palace lad got me, my mate and his 9 year old son tickets in the place part of the Arthur Waite stand (only way we could get them) - he met us for beers and banter in the high street, one of the best parts of the game was when the teams came out to Glad All Over - looked and sounded brilliant as the whole ground joined in. A kind steward let us in with the Newcastle fans and our end was full of the christmas spirit but all god natured fun - saw the whole crowd at half time part to allow a disabled lass get to the beer stand first. I will not dwell on the game, all things considered the atmosphere was brilliant, our away support is always like that, win or lose, however we could learn a lot from you lads at home. After the match headed towards Norwood train station, had a couple of beers in a cafe there, then went for some cans for train back, then decided to go in the bar on the corner near the station, bouncers looked after our cans whilst we went in, what a brilliant time we had, Stiff Little Fingers belting out Silver Linings as we walked in, whole bar was going mental, we ended getting carried away with it to the extent i missed my train to london and my connecting train home, if we did not have my mates son i think we would of just stayed there, it was great (begs the question whats it like after you win a big game ?). I have talked to loads of people who were at Palace and overheard comments and stories of how their day was, everyone wants to go back next year, so fingers crossed. Any of you travelling up this weekend to Sunderland, my advice, drink in Newcastle and get the Metro through, go to game and come back to Newcastle, you will have a far better time, be welcomed with open arms by the lads and more than likely the lasses. If stopping over Newcastle is a good night out, so is Tynemouth on the coast, also Jesmond, you will get no hassle........Sunderland on the other hand is a bit backward in the respect (not rivalry talking here). So good luck, hope it all works out for you, next year i want to be stopping down for the weekend. Cheers
Ha ha i remember some great snowball fights between the Scoreboard End of the Gallowgate and The Corner. I get embarrassed now when they go on about the atmosphere on Sky, but back in the day it was special and like you say we always found ways to keep ourselves entertained - streaking was also in vogue for a long time.

Just found a clip of the match I went to. We were behind the goal Pardew scored in, tucked away in the corner (I always thought it was Geoff Thomas who scored!)
Aye, sometimes i look back and things are not how i remember them, the mists of time etc, surprised it was not Pardew with the head mind !
