Also that 1976 Leeds team had been the best in England over the preceding 5 or 6 years too with Derby and Arsenal their main rivals for that accolade.

Monkey put it very well. Richter Scale stuff indeed.

I would say it was like Gillingham say beating Man.City away now, but It was bigger than that wasn't it? because back then the FA Cup was serious stuff and everyone used to play their strongest sides and give their all.
Cup upsets these days are never the same because you always wonder how much effort the big boys are putting in and they've usually put out a weakened team.

I don't think I've ever seen so many people misunderstand a question.

Nowhere near the best ever game. However, had it been our final game of the season, and only the win would keep us up, it might have made the top 5.

My personal best was the Liverpool 4-3 win in the cup. I was working, so couldn't make the game. Missed the first half and went to meet my scouse girlfriend (at the time) in the local. How she gloated! "We'll score 10 today".

Oh the memories!!!!

Last sh*g I got from her. Even had to buy a takeaway for myself!

Win-win

Was Saturday's result and performance the best ever in our history?

Consider the facts:-

Chelsea top of premier League
Chelsea in last 8 of Champions league 1.e. one of the best 8 teams in Europe

The only match that comes close was when Palace beat an all time great Liverpool team 4-3 in 1990

Thoughts?

I've been going since 2000 and I agree this was our best performance. I think a lot of people have mis-understood your statement.

Sure, getting a win at Stockport and a draw at Hillsborough were far more important results and had far more riding on them. But in terms of the quality of the performance, you can't compare a 2-2 draw at a team who got relegated from the Championship with outplaying and beating the Premier League leaders and one of the top teams in Europe. The same performance yesterday would have stuffed Sheff Wed/Stockport 7-0.

Yeh but no.

Beating Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, United 2-1 at Old Trafford and the scum 2-0 at the Mansex in terms of performance alone.

Liverpool 4-3 epic, lost 9-0 to them that same season.Stopped them winning the double.Don't get any better.Chelsea win is special and is up there but that afternoon stood in the holte end was on a different level.

This will always be the best game ever. Went to the 9-0 away too which made the 4-3 even more special. And Ian Wright was out injured too!!

Next best was our biggest home crowd against Burnley for me. The atmosphere was incredible, and it was my first match too...

Still being a football club probably my top result.
Ten point reduction overnight at Geordie land and still staying up. s***ting out in Europe due to scousers back in. f***ing fa love us.
And keeping Alan( shocking defending) scare face Hansen down to his usual sentence of dricel on sat night. What a sad case of 1990 fa cup syndrome disease. CVNT

Get it on-get it in-F**K OFF ALAN HANSEN!!

It is pretty much the same result as we got against Liverpool last time round in the premiership. We beat them 1-0 and if I remember rightly, we were the only team to get anything out of them that month - the month they won the champions league. That should have been the result that kept us up that season, I hope it is not repeated.

Stockport, Sheffield Weds, Liverpool, Brighton, Watford all meant so much more because they were all one off matches with a greater prize than just 3 points at the end of it. So as good as the Chelsea match was, it only meant 3 points and the end of it so for me comes nowhere near the other matches mentioned (unless of course come the end of the season we stay up because of those 3 bonus points).

Lol this. In my time of going to Palace games (15 years or so) it is probably the best result. Beating top of the league, effectively ending their title hopes, with a fairly weak team of our own.

I would say though that the FA Cup semi vs Liverpool is a bigger result as they were awesome back in them days, had hammered us that season and was a cup semi.

Wolves FA Cup 3-0 Danny Butterfield six minute perfect hatrick. Best six minutes of Palace football ever... Not our best game, or most important game, but those six minutes in which our right back, who hadn't scored in six years, obtained an almost unheard of achievement in the annuals of football.

Only Dougie Freedman and Peter Simpson can really touch that (in terms of scoring achievement).

One of our best results was a losing one.

Getting Real Madrid over in a match to celebrate switching on our new floodlights in 1962, now that's what I call a result.

Real were probably one of the best teams in the world then. Star studded, they had won the first 5 Champions Leagues between 1955 and 1960.

They brought over a very strong team, including Di Stefano, Puskas and Ghento [ I think ] and beat us 4-3,
although they were 4-0 up and probably relaxed so as
not to embarrass their hosts.
