One of the players I have been totally wrong about. Always appreciated him, but did not think he was really up to it at this level. I was wrong.

I'm the same, thought his legs had gone and would at best be a squad player. I think he really workedon his fitness during the summer, probably appreciates being in the PL more than some of the youngsters as he doesn't have long left.

I love his marauding runs, a mixture of excitement and fear!!

the dignified don't even enter in the game

It is only Joel Ward's peformances this term that would stop me from voting DD player of the season.

Gabbidon was harshly dropped but like some have said on this thread he does have a mistake in him (Newcastle at home he was at fault for two of the goals, Norwich at home didn't close down quick enough).

For me I would give DD the POTY. Ward has been brilliant but just for sheer determination, improvement on his game and proving his critics wrong I would give it to the Irishman.

Another great buy under the Freedman regime (they could spot a bargain!)

Dougie really could spot a good player and knew how to use players. He achieved improvement using the players at his disposal and adding unlikely 'good uns' to the squad. Made all the right decisions until he made the wrong one and left. Delany does the job, but it seems, almost out off misadventure. Still he's doing it well, so who are we to complain? But like the rest on here, I marvel!

Just want to add my voice to the chorus of approval. Like many I doubted he'd make the step up. Never doubted his determination, just his pace, thought top Prem strikers might rip him apart with their pace and movement. Hasn't happened. Very happy to say I was wrong.

For me I think Ward just edges POTY but DD is most definitely a contender.

I know it's been said before on here but just thought I would give it another mention.

He has been colossus this season for us and I don't think any of us saw it coming. I remember when he was given a new contract in the summer and everyone was questioning the thought behind it but he has proved us all wrong.

He rarely looks out of place in this league and is definitely up there with Ward and Speroni for POTY.

Probably the biggest shock of the season (in terms of who would cut it in the prem) for me and I hope that, if we do stay up, he will still be at the centre of our defence come next season.

Surely no one who was at Wembley questioned it for a minute?

Ward is a better footballer, but is Delaney not more important to our season?

I'm so torn between Damo and wardy for player of the year. They could not have been better and I think both could get into any prem side outside the top 8. Been so solid. As much as Dougie left the job "half finished" we cannot deny he could spot a good player. An unknown Aussie, a Bristol city reserve, a underwhelming Pompey RB, a freeby from Brighton and an aging paddy about to give up football. If Wardy wins player of the year it will be deserved if Damo wins it will be well deserved also. But out of respect for a "Tired Journey Men" about to give up football all together it has to go to the Irish man.

Good points EastEnd. You may have persuaded me! (is this a first for HOL?!)

Spoke to a Sunderland fan at work about West Ham's 2nd goal when their CB vaguely waved a foot at the ball as it flew past towards the goal, does anyone think DD wouldn't have flung his body in the way of that shot? Of course he would, as would any Palace defender. We agreed, that's why they are going down - not enough players willing to put their body on the line.

Damo, Dann, Jedinak, Ledley and Bolasie all strike me as players who would rather be broken in half then have their pride hurt by wincing out of a challenge. Ward does not need to however because his positioning and marking skills are at the quality of a CB and the way he carries the ball and distributes is like a full back or CM. Hence his versatility.

Gotta say I thought Ward looked rubbish in midfield for those few games. Kept passing balls at knee height which were impossible to control. Great distribution from full back though I agree.
