291 pages devoted to a Party which ended up with one MP.

That's a successful campaign of sorts.

'One MP'. My god that sound's good.

Will be using that later as it's Friday instead of the usual naming of the 1966 World cup winning team.

And yet they're now the third biggest party in the UK with 12.6% of the vote. That is scary!

And I see signs of half remembered days, I hear bells that chime in strange familiar ways

Come on Thanet South - champing at the bit here.

CON Hold

I feel Farage has been hard done by. With the 3rd most votes and only 1 seat. This is why politics are so corrupt

Edited by Daz.CPFC (08 May 2015 10.39am)

Nothing in the South Thanet campaign was about the qualities of the other candidates. It was all about keeping Farage out. All the nasty literature and smears from UAF et al. there paid off.

South Thanet have "not" Farage, but have lost someone who would have actually represented them on a local platform.

1 seat from 13% of the vote. That's why UK politics is such a joke.

UKIP got 6% to 7% around here and lots of other places too. I wouldn't like them to have 13% of the seats in Parliament going by that just because they managed to get well above 13% in a small minority of areas.

They represent a few pockets of the UK quite well but not the main swathe. They just didn't have enough broad appeal.

Edited by Kermit8 (08 May 2015 11.05am)

I don't like UKIP but they got twice the national percentage of vote that the Lib Dems got. UKIP got one seat, the Lib Dems have 8.

That is neither representational or democratic.

The SNP isn't really a fair example, as that's a different country, but the fact that they nearly doubled the Lib Dem turn out, and still finished behind them in seats points to how f**ked the system is.

Doesn't matter what party the represent or how you feel about them, if you support representative democracy, its impossible to claim its a fair result.

If the SNP was called something different and stood in England, they'd probably have crucified Labour as well, as most peoples only issue with them seems to be a fear of them being Scotish (indeed the Conservatives were more worried about the SNP than Labour).

Fairness and politics are unlikely bedfellows, don't you think? The system we have isn't fair but nor do I believe PR would be fair. Why on earth should UKIP have 81 MPs - their PR 13% - when on the ground they could only actually muster one? At least the SNP can boast about actually winning constituencies.

The only proper and fair solution is more discriminating and stronger regional governance. More devolution. As in the UKIP MP can actually do something for the residents of Clacton without having to beg to Westminster. Better than just pissing in the wind for the next four or five years.

...and theres the question Kerms - is constituency based electioneering fit for purpose, when people vote and parties campaign on national issues and platforms ??

Are they? Not really. When their sole MP sits alongside 55 SNP will he be thinking 'I am so much bigger than you'?

They've had their 15mins. Nigel is gone. A hotchpotch of a 'Referendum' in two years. No Brexit following.

3rd most popular party vote wise 'yes'. 3rd biggest? Nah. DUP will have more influence than them.

A terrible niht for Labour and the Lib Dems, but a bad night for UKIP too. Losing Farage, plus as others have said the reality that you can get about 13% of the vote and have it amount to so little. PR is needed in my view. Farage agrees.

Of course there's this idea that it will ensure a fair EU vote, but this is politics, so we need to get real. The EU doesn't want us to leave, nor do the Americans, nor do the Conservatives for that matter. There's one logical conclusion to be drawn from that. It won't happen.

It wont - its likely a few more UKIP MP's might have been able to drive out some action for necessary change that needs to happen with our European relationship.

That's the thing about this result, people are cheering like it's a victory in terms of right vs left. When the dust settles though, people of various ideologies will feel done over.

Ask yourself - has the DUP asked for curbs on immigration or an EU referendum?

You know who has been pushing for that.

Therefore, UKIP has influence.

Deal with it and the failure of the left.

Farage has certainly lost his lilt. He's peeved at the system and rightfully so. I wonder if he'll stand again later in the year though, like he's hinted. As much stick as he gets, he is a big personality and very capable.

He'll be back and UKIP will steal back some seats in by elections.

He is the very embodiment of UKIP and I wouldn't be suprised to see him stand for the Leadership election in September.

I do have time for his 'head on' style. Just days ago, when he was confronted, as tends to happen, he didn't head for the door as Cameron would've, or mumble like Miliband, he took the leaflet the guy was peddling and told him why it was completely wrong point by point. He's more of an old style politicians really, rather than the media trained bunch of today.

Do you think the fact that 13% got them one seat will damage support for UKIP? I guess it will depend on what Cameron offers in way of a referendum. He's in a tough spot with that.
