I saw him linked with Arsenal in the papers last week. If a club like that (or Liverpool) are willing to match our bid we'd obviously have no chance. Our best hope might be if those clubs think £8 million is too much. I'd be surprised if this comes off but good signing in my view if it does.

Caulker would be a good signing. But a question? Do we have a LB lined up as well - given we've released our last two incumbents ?

As for Caulker, he has pace and reads the game well and he says himself the heading is one of his strengths.He is athletic and has good composure on the ball but he does tend to struggle a little bit on the turn.

You do come up with some total tosh don't you. Fact is Cardiff kept only 7 clean sheets last season, and conceded 3 or more goals in games 13 times, the same number of times we kept clean sheets, plus their defensive midfield also had some very good players in Ruiz, Mutch, Medel and Whittingham, the simple fact is their defense was not good enough as a whole, and much of that is down to the captain and his ability or inability to marshal his troops effectively.

I was referring to drawing conclusions in general not specifically in relation to Cardiff ! What's "Tosh" about that ? Finally, I DO come up with "Tosh" sometimes - as those both inside and outside of HOL have asserted !!!!

I thought he made a very valid point. In contrast, our defensive record was outstanding, but I wouldn't say it's because we had any outstanding individual defenders (Dann and Ward are both decent, but not (yet) world-beaters). The bottom line is that we defended as a team, and that made all our individual defenders look good. In Cardiff's case, it was the opposite so Caulker looked a worse player than he probably is individually. Caulker would thrive in Pulis' system, which is more or less designed to turn average centre backs into great ones.

Very difficult to assess how good a player someone is when they are playing in a defensive system that isnt working, in a club in freefall. I a sure Caulker would play much more to his maximum potential in a TP system

In the first third of the season we leaked goals like mad so according to Sg Bilko our "defense was not good enough as a whole, and much of that is down to the captain and his ability or inability to marshal his troops" which is a bit of an indictment on Captain Jedinak as well as Ward and Delaney. Tony Pulis's appointment and coaching on how to defend turned our leaky defence into one that was quite difficult to penetrate
