How often do player swaps or pas actually work out? Hardly ever so when people say give them 3 players etc this sort of deal is very hard to broker.

The resounding silence might be good news. 85k wages aren't a demand; they're a negotiating position. Also, they're easy to handle if you use incentive clauses and if he scores 20 goals, no one will mind the outlay. I've never particularly wanted Austin but as other clubs sign their forwards (Newcastle last week, Villa this, etc.) he's in danger of being left beside the dance floor without a partner. He'll know this, and also knows it weakens his bargaining position. As possible destinations disappear, our chance of signing him gets better and better (which is the value of patience...risk letting everything play out with other clubs and if you're the last man standing, you'll get the player at your price.) I would not be shocked if this one happened within a week; I'd expect at least two of Bannan, Guediora and possible even Mariappa to be involved going the other way. As always, a good point well made Syd. The player(s) plus fee route was 'rumoured' a few weeks ago - 2 players from the short list you mentioned. It didn't have traction then, but as you say, his bargaining position will weaken now, the nearer to PL kick off we get. No mention of Slimani anywhere, sadly Nepotism in the 'Eagle' household from Sydthe and son Peter ? I think Syd would be exceedingly old if I were his son! I actually think he makes a lot of sensible comments...

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Charlie Austin (rumour)' by james03 Something I've been saying to friends since this transfer season began is that of all the strikers we've been linked with, Austin would be the shrewdest investment. Even more so if we can get some bodies off the wage bill as a part of the deal. He is English and if he can replicate or exceed last season in a better team then the bigger teams will be interested and suddenly our £15m investment (or whatever) will be £30m+ return. I imagine the big four want to wait another season to see if Austin is the real deal. QPR will know this and after their windfall from the Sterling deal you can bet any deal will have a decent sell on clause in it. While I don't like the idea of us selling good players after one season I much prefer that to us losing money on a "marquee signing" from abroad who doesn't settle at all. Having said all that he could be a flop, however I imagine a Championship Club will still pay £5m-£7m for his services given his pedigree at that level. Overall, if he comes and scores 10 goals we'll not have lost money, any more goals than that and we're getting a return.
