We must be careful with Austin, rumour has it that although he has played the full season for QPR his knees are still a bit of a problem that is why no one has come up with asking price. To much of a risk.

It's not a rumour; it's an established fact. It's already caused one transfer to fall through. It doesn't mean he won't go on for years but it does, of course, make it more likely that at some point he may have a major breakdown.

The bottom line is that this isn't really an issue. It's why you have insurance on contracts. Of course, the cost of insurance on Austin's contract increases the amount we'll have to pay for him in real terms as it will be higher than it would be to insure a fully healthy player but we know that already and you can assume that if we're interested in him we've thus taken it into account. The same is true with other clubs. Note that what Sullivan said last week is that West Ham weren't interested because they couldn't afford another Andy Carrol situation; not the fact of the injury in itself.

I was the manager of the sports division of S.W.Taylor's Insurance Brokerage in the eighties with the main accounts being the then Football League and Football Association.

Whilst insurance and the cover for players may have changed since my day I doubt the main area of cover would. There is no way, for any amount of premium, that they would insure Austin's (or any other players) pre-existing condition(s).

I therefore believe if we purchased him we would be carrying the risk ourselves - that's one heck of a risk for a player who will cost close on 15m.

The insurance market might not have changed but the Financial Services market has and the bottom line is that structured products will more or less always deliver the other side of any bet you want to make. So it may be a derivative rather than a traditional insurance policy but someone, somewhere will be interested in "insuring" the deal. Or that's my guess.

You are probably right Syd but at what price? - astronomical and then some would be my guess.

Norwich as well as Bournmouth are now in for Murray, and Spurs are also enquiring about Yala, so pices of the puzzle are falling into place?

There is no way that QPR will get 15m up front with his medical history. Parish is a fine negotiator and their will be clauses galore in the deal to protect both sides so the risks will be fairly minimal. Hope we do it though because the bloke definitely knows where the net is.

They know that, which is why a "player plus" deal is most likely and why the fact that we have players they want puts us in a strong position. Trust me, if they accept 3 million cash for Austin then Gayle will suddenly become a 12 million valued player and if they insist on 12 million in cash then Gayle will become a 3 million pound value makeweight. The player will be valued at whatever is needed to round the total figure up to 15 million, enabling QPR to tell their fans they held out and got what they wanted. Not than I'm being cynical or anything.

We are only guessing that its his knee problem that has stopped clubs from pursuing him.

If he gets seriously injured it won't be so bad.

He can always help with the stadium renovation as he'll already be on the payroll.

Syd, I can't see Austin and Wickham together, they're too similar. But i agree about Austin being a goalscorer. He is the goal scoring target man all teams crave, Shearer-esque in terms of what a team thinks they're buying. Wickham 'potentially' is the same but needs 15-20 goals a season in him before he can be put on that shelf, hence the fact he cost 7m less than Austin, however he's five years younger so maybe his time will come.

Unless we move Murray/Gayle/Campbell on I just don't think this deal will happen. The Sunday papers lazily suggested it and now people are longing for it to happen. My gut says it won't. My gut also says he'd do very well at palace. Unfortunately it won't happen and I fear this new found optimism on potentially landing Austin only for him to go elsewhere will see this site explode in negativity, even though we've never been in for him since wickham arrived.

I don't think we'll see Wickham/Austin together barring occasionally, but there are match situations (say, you're 2-0 up with 15 minutes to go) where bringing on Jedi and Wickham in place of, say, Wilf and Austin would make sense. There are also some opponents where it would make sense to include a Wickham-type forward from the start.

I think injury is obviously the prime concern with Austin but it is what it is. Either you're prepared to sign him or you're not. To be honest, I'm not sure it matters that much anyway as you're covered by an insurance policy although that obviously adds to the cost.

I think it's pretty clear we want to offload Gayle or Murray (or both), particularly the former and I'd agree there's zero chance we sign Austin if that doesn't happen. But I think it will happen, quite likely both rather than just one. As deadline madness takes over these sorts of things tend to fall into place. What I'd like to know is, if we are interested in another goalscorer, are we "all in" on Austin or is there a Plan B we don't know about? And if so, who?

I've thought for some time Austin would happen. I still do. Parish is pretty canny and I don't think he'd publicly talk about a target he didn't think he could get.

Following on from Syd's earlier post I would like Austinn but the player addition that would give us more scope for variety in our forward line would be Remy rather than Austin. Austin I think if he remains fit would score more but Remy would offer greater variation and could be our plan B

If we signed Remy he'd be our plan A, B, C and D. He wouldn't be an alternative off the bench for Connor Wickham.

The player i wanted was Remy, i would be disappointed to lose Murray and Gayle for Austin. If Austin came in and did the business then great, but i just cant get excited about this move.

I cant make my mind up about this one. 15 Million is a lot for such a risk. Plus I quite like our attacking options at the moment. I rate Gayle very highly, he is young and with the right guidance under Pards, i think he can do very well for us. Plus Sako can obviously finish and isnt afraid of having a go. On top that we have Bamford and Wickham, and then Chams when hes fully fit. But As much as I love Glen, I think it makes sense to say our goodbyes, 5 Million is very good money, especially for a 31 year old striker. This could make way for a pacey CB to partner Dann. Delaney looks to be struggling IMHO.

Harsh on Delaney. I often think we are too quick to see negatives things in Delaney that aren't there simply because he was a free transfer and is into his thirties.

He's 25, Clinton Morrison was banging them in for us as a 19 year old. I know he divides opinion Gayle but he's never going to be the striker we need. I'd love Austin here and it for meant selling Gayle and unfortunately Murray then I think we should be all over it. Austin can play the lone striker role and he can score. He'd be perfect for Palace.
