Feel pretty certain is wasn't started deliberately as the rubbish underneath the stands was well known about and a dropped fag butt seems reasonable. Also, the chairman dodgy or not didn't come across as insincere or hiding something in the aftermath.

I have no idea if it was deliberate or not, or hope not, but he should have been prosecuted for manslaughter anyway.

Quote Methinks someone wants to sell some sensational book. He'll be on Graham Norton next.

That's a bit harsh.

Manslaughter requires a degree of malicious intent.

I have a feint memory of watching the horrific scenes on a TV in the "Executive Lounge" at SP. Really cannot remember who we were playing that day - It was 30 years ago and I am getting old !!!!

There’s no doubt the Scousers are grief monkeys but they have had good reason to keep the Hillsborough tragedy in the publics mind. Proven by the fact that they are getting some kind of justice all these years later.

Until this story, there was no reason to think there was any more than meets the eye with Valley parade - doesn’t make it any less tragic of course.

When I was a kid, my Dad was a fireman and had a copy of the footage from the Valley Parade fire and let me see it for some reason. It was the most horrible thing I’d ever seen and always stayed with me.

Must for once agree with Kermit, no reason to suspect the fire was started deliberately. Mr. Hegginbotham was well known in the textile industry, fires were very frequent all around the industry. Yes I think just sensationalism . If you have ever seen a fire catch hold in a textile mill you would know how fast it runs, from one end of the building to the other in seconds jumping from the floor to the ceiling.
I've seen it several times having worked for Wormalds high hazard fire protection. The fire also just about killed off Mr. Hegginbotham.

Would be interested to know how many business the chairman owned over the years. Back then fires were much more commonplace than they are now. Power cuts were frequent and candles would be lit. Can remember the Bradford fire more than any of the other disasters because of the guy who ran out of the stands on fire was truly shocking to witness.

Given Bradford were playing Lincoln that day, it`s not surprising I knew one or two folk who were there that day.
One of my closest mates around that time was there. He was also caught up in the Summerland IOM fire a few years earlier, poor sod.
I really hope it wasn`t arson. The judge who chaired the enquiry says not.

That same video clip is still used in health and safety and fire saftey training courses to show just how quickly a disaster can unfold.

Not sure if they question has been asked but why set fire to the stand during a football match with the police and television cameras present and also potential witnesses. Surely it would have been better to set fire to the stand at night to avoid loss of life?

No smoke without fire would seem an appropriate response
