I've done some dreadfully sad things with this game over the years... One particular lowlight was when I was about 15, and my mum caught me parading around the house with one of her vases pretending it was the League Cup.

Is the best thing I've read on HOL for a while now!

Yes, I've been playing football manager since champ man 1 back int he early 90's. God I remember I also played the first ever football manager game. It was on the commodore plus 4 and was called football manager I think. Yes it was I just googled it, 1986, my god I'm getting old.

I even used to have 2 pencils went i went to a relatives house, those pencils with the multiple flat sides, write a number on them fro 0 to whatever it went up to (can't remember) and roll one each for each team. Used to play whole seasons. Obviously no management just to see who would win the league.

Back to champ man/footy manager I have probably spent more time on this than doing anything else in my life possibly except sleeping. Sick days at work, used to have different games saved at various friends or relatives houses computers so basically I could just sit there and play the game.

Used to do anything to play, got the xbox version so I could have a quick match or update when the adverts were on between tv programs I liked or the exes soaps.

Can't play nowadays because I value life to much lol. Also maybe I am getting old because it just seems like there are too many features now. I do have a watered down version on my phone that I play on the way to work, but it's just too easy, multiple winners of the premiership and champions league with Weston Super Mare.

Thanks for this thread reminded me of some old memories.

Have to finish by saying my favourite version was Champ Manager Italia, released I think in 90 or 91. Loved that game to bits, still do. May have to dl it.

Ah, that takes me back to my first management game. It was the Sinclair Spectrum version of the game you mention above (I think, Google had to help me out). I also used to play football dice with my dad. You'd roll dice and it'd say things like "you've won a corner, roll the corner dice" but I'd take it further and play out entire leagues with them! I even created an Excel spreadsheet version of it using a weighted random number generator and some hastily written VBa code so I could play my own management sim at work while it looked like I was working. It got out of hand when I created a second and third tier, thought I best get on with my job!

I used to play a lot! Palace first then when the dates got unrealistic and players were all fake I would start again with a non league team.

I haven't actually played for a couple years, since we did a HOL league a few summers back.. not sure why I'm admitting to this, but once upon a time I had a lady friend staying over and I waited very patiently for her to fall asleep so that I could load my laptop up and complete the signing of Tom Huddlestone.

Been there! Although planning intricate set pieces in your head is a great way to perform better in bed.

Getting so f***ed off with Jedinak being sent-off and my defence just crumbling in an FA Cup Final that I found myself hurling abuse at my daughter's soft teddy bears as if they were my beaten team at full-time.

Most exciting attacking trio at Selhurst Park in years.

Hero!!

I used to write all my pre and post-match speeches in FM2014 (where you can edit the text - not the motivate, praise tell em to enjoy the game).

The game castigates you for using certain words.

I've fallen into a bit of a low right now. I got my Tier 8 team into the Championship after about 16 seasons on FM2012 but it irritated me that the stands in my ground were yellow despite my club's colours being green. It mattered more and more the bigger my stadium got. So I bought FM2015 where the stadium colours were correct. I just won the league in my first season using my bog standard Football Manager non-league approach but I actually miss some of my old players and I feel like my current players don't really like me despite my achievement.

Systematically firing my staff and replacing them with my own hand picked staff has cheered me up. Especially as they have female physios now and I've decided I'm having a virtual affair with mine.

So much of me in this thread! I haven't played it for a few years now but I used to lose big chunks of my life to it. In my lunch breaks at work I be writing out formations thinking about when I could promote a youth player, I used to take great pride in bringing in a youth player and them then turning into a decent player.

I remember managing Southampton and signing a guy called Shane Tudor who went on to be an England regular. When I started the game again with another team I signed him but he never reached the previous heights....so sad.

I believe Hawksby and Jacobs on Talksport did something on this a few years back and one guy got dressed up in a suit for cup finals and someone played the finals in real time!

Happy days....they should be conventions

The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years

Conventions would be amazing. I'd definitely rock up in a shirt and jumper combo (Tim Sherwood style).

Have you ever been lying in bed and had the following sort of conversation in your head?:
"Lee, you've always been one of the best players I've ever brought through the youth system and there'll always be a place at this club for you".
"Boss, you've given me 5 games this season and loaned me out, I need to further my career".
"Lee, you broke your leg and we paid your wages for a whole season, I wouldn't do that if I didn't value you. Stick with it, maybe work on your coaching badges and there'll be a place for you as my assistant manager any time you should want it".
"Boss, thank you, you've always kept faith with me, you're right, I should return the favour".

Then when you switch the game on you have the following options:
"A) Tell Lee to f*ck off and find another club or B) Promise him 40+ games per season"
And you sit there dying inside that you can't explain to your computer generated player all the things you wanted to tell him.

Or is that just me?!

I remember managing Espanyol to the Spanish title with Luca Toni getting over 50 goals in a season. The next season we started badly and in a fit of temper took the option to publicly criticise the players. Lost the dressing room, the chairman got he hump and I was sacked 5 games later....heartbreaking.

Backup saves might be the answer. I never like to cheat because that seems a bit pointless, but I am considering keeping duplicate saves in case I ever do anything irrecoverable to my save game!
