The Clash - I know this will anger many on here but I just never 'got' them.

Should I stay or should I go is ok - but Rock The Casbah is bloody awful.

*applauds* - with you all the way on that one Pikes. Listened to their album 'Give 'em enough rope' - It's ok and so are they but well overrated.

That's funny I just purchased give em enough rope on vinyl and I think it's f***ing amazing. How can you tell me you don't think it's very good? Gotta be one of the most energetic and rebellious albums ever.
The clash are overrated? How many hit singles did they have? Honestly this is one instance where I don't care about respecting opinions. You two are f***ing crazy

There were just so many outstanding bands around roughly the same time when they first got noticed - The Stranglers, Joy Division, early Simple Minds, The Jam and afew others, that they always seemed Championship rather than Prem to me. Their stuff just doesn't stand up in comparison though appreciate they have a massive following still - and I've only heard probably a fifth of their stuff - so must have something about them. Not for me though. Average.

Have to agree with you on this one Kermit. Have for many years thought the Clash were vastly over rated. Do believe that if people talk things up enough, other people will start to believe that it must be brilliant, when really, its just OK.
Now the other bands you mention, The Jam, Joy Division etc, now they really are premiership level.

So far all of the replies are f***ing nonsense. The beatles? The who? Overrated my f***ing arse. I'm not a led zeppelin fan, but overrated they are not. It's actually making me laugh. I think you may be confusing 'overrated' with 'I've never listened to any of their material outside of what's on the radio'. That can be the only explanation.

They're overated, doesn't mean they're not good or even great bands, just that they're no where near as relevant or good as they're portrayed. Beatles released maybe two really good albums (Revolver and the White Album).

Good, but definitely overrated, probably because of their popularity.

The Clash are most definitely Champions League,semi-final losing on penalties! Possibly more of an influence than all the above and probably left more of a legacy! My 5 bands are;The Police(nice to see lots in agreement);Coldplay(why?);Hard-Fi(wanna-be-Clash);Duran Duran(too poncey);UB40(ja-fake-can reggae at it's worst)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjmh52fkQJA Ollie's Dad,Ash.

Just a quickie U2 aren't British , they're Irish

I can accept it if someone doesn't like the Beatle's music - each to our own and all , but to say they are overrated is nonsense.

They single handedly changed the face and sound of popular music. I don't know how old you are but if you were around and listening to music in the early 60s you would know just how seismic their arrival on the scene was.

I have just had a look at the pop chart for January 1962, a year before the Beatle's first big hit, Please Please Me. It is full of fairly dull anodyne stuff .. Cliff Richard, Russ Conway, Helen Shapiro, Petula Clark. Hearing the Beatles for the first time was like one great blast of fresh air. It was so different and exciting.

Overnight they rendered the vast majority of chart acts obsolete. That chart of 1962 didn't feature one single group i.e. guitarists, drums, vocals. By the end of 1963, thanks to the influence of The Beatles, it was full of groups.

Also, I doubt if one single song in that 1962 chart was written by the performer(s). Again, the Beatles changed all that making it acceptable for artists to write their own material.

It would have been quite understandable had the Beatles, after their phenomenal success, played it safe and carried on churning out more She Loves Yous and I Want To Hold Your Hands. But no, they innovated and experimented with sound, instruments, production and lyrics.

They were very good musicians, could sing and harmonise beautifully, and wrote a wonderful catalogue songs that are still enjoyed, if not by you, by millions today.

On that basis it is just meaningless to say they are overrated. And if that argument is not enough I give you a group who gave us Strawberry Field, Eleanor Rigby, Norwegian Wood, Penny Lane, Help, We Can Work it Out, Hey Jude, Revolution, Day in the Life, In My Life, Let it Be, I Am the Walrus, Long and Winding Road, Tomorrow Never Knows, Blackbird ..... all so different and never ever sounding the same.

I rest my case.
