I cant believe people are quoting The Mirror and Star as reliable sources of information on the status, wages etc.. - you may as well ask your 3 year olds what they think and know.

My rule is, if the papers say something I want to hear then I believe them (and text my dad on an hourly basis to tell him we are signing Austin, Cabaye, Falcao etc) but if it's something I don't want to hear then I go "pah, just newspaper nonsense". For that reason I'm pretty convinced Ian Wright is still playing for us.

A quick guide to Fleet Streets finest

Daily Star - Tits
Daily Mirror - f*** all about nothing
Daily Mail - Evil foreigners and darkies ruining the country
Daily Express - Lady Diana - Princess of Hearts
The Sun - Depends on what side of the bed Rupert woke up on
Guardian - Tories blah,blah,blah
Indie - Tories blah, blah, blah

You've just reminded me why I never buy a paper nowadays.

Paying for Cabaye

Sell - Guediora (£2m), Bannan (£2m), Williams (very sadly)(£2m)

Clyne Sell On Fee - (£2.5m)

CPFC 10 - (£1.5m rising to £4.5m)

Wages

From three player sales - £50k pw released

CPFC 10 - £50k pw.

So for a potential net outlay of up to £4.5m in transfer fees (assuming all three above are sold) and £50k pw in wages extra (£100k pw) - we get a quality player.

Just my thoughts.

I don't think Williams is going anywhere, except maybe on loan.

Let's be realistic, in the current climate Cabaye is a £100,000 a week player and we can't avoid paying that sort of wage unless we want to move to the next level. The alternative is we take a massive gamble on an unproven talent who steps up to the plate straight away, which is risky at best. Market forces dictate that if demand for proven, established top 10 internationals outstrips supply then bullets have to be bitten if we are to build on what the board and Pardew have done, and their vision for the club.
It's a massive statement of intent by the club. It indicates to other high profile targets (Austin, Remy et al) that we are serious about kicking on and challenging for Europe.
It also indicates to the likes of Dann and Bolasie (I for one think that Dann would be crazy to leave now)that this could be a chance to do something very special with this club. IF he goes to Everton he will just plod along, be solid and finish mid-table for the next few years- I doubt he will become an Everton legend- but he could well be if he stays here. I genuinely think we have more potential with the squad we have (even before we add one or two quality players) than any team outside the top 6- and I'm generally one of the more pessimistic Palace fans!
If we can add a 20+ striker and a long-term partner for Dann Europe really isn't out of our reach.
And if we can consolidate for the next couple of years we MUST increase capacity or move. The catchment area for the club has to be one of the highest in Europe, never mind England.

Not signed. Any team could gazump. However, if he does, to have beaten WHU is one thing; I am not sure Arsenal were ever that interested; but Roma?... and apparently Atletico Madrid!?

Shows the advantage playing time actually has for some players. Edabayour [for example] would have gone to the one offering the largest cut of the signing on fee and the biggest wages irrespective of playing time.

The fact it is on the BBC suggests it is very near to done.

They aren't the average tabloid fare of reporting rumours. Normally if it is on there the deal is either as good as done or can only be hijacked.

As far as I am concerned, it's not speculation any more: we have had a bid accepted and we have agreed personal terms in principal. Yes someone could still gazump us but think it would be unlikely now.

Cabaye - even if it is for the reported £100k a week (which would be a lot more than I would hope we would be paying) - represents a massive statement of intent from the club about where we want to go. And the fact that he is willing to come here - a man who was expecting to be playing champions league football this season - shows that we have a burgeoning reputation.

Yes it's a lot of money. Yes it's a bit of a gamble. But he is a quality player and it is genuinely very exciting.

If he does sign, will it pursuade other players to join who might have otherwise said no? I wonder if it would prompt Austin to come on board?

Agree with you. For SP & AP to persuade a player of Cabaye's type to sign for Palace is a huge achievement and shouldn't be understated. Of course there's risks but a calculated one and the wages whilst appear huge, SP doesn't do anything that puts the club's future in danger so we can rest assured the club can afford it and any other incoming signings.

Amazing times...about to sign the best player we have ever signed. Who would have thought that after Hillsborough

The ups and downs of Palace have left me older than my years

Nor me!
The BBC does indeed suggest that unless it is hijacked that the deal is done.
Pardew will be the reason for this and if sealed this week it will be interesting to see what happens with Jedi and Ledley - can we keep both without the guarantee of a regular starting place.
A quandary - but a good one - as any business grows there are growing pains and CPFC are no different.
Certainly Bolasie and Dann will think twice about moving on - for now at least!
A nice start to the transfer window if it goes through.
