Surely the unions will easily get 40% to vote for action when the toiling masses are being treated as slaves by the exploitative capitalist class and their so called 'democratically' elected puppet governments? After all, all they have to lose is their chains?

Human nature (in the main) is to let somebody else do the work for them. This applies in every walk of life regardless of their political stance.
It's a sad fact of life but a fact all the same.

But how is the revolution (that Marx said was inevitable)to come about if the toiling masses are sitting on their arses watching Britain's Got Talent on their ipads (as they can't afford a TV) instead of going on anti-austerity marches?

I've always found it amazing that retired workers who are still members of the union get to vote on strike action. They won't have to walk out and lose a day's pay (must be some sort of power trip to be able to insist on people who actually stand to lose out by strike action when you won't personally be affected).

The comparisons with elections are, of course, fallacious (as I'm sure those making them are well aware). Expecting a decent majority in a yes/no decision seems far more reasonable than expecting it in a Con/Lab/LD/Green/UKIP/SNP/PC/Other choice.

If you get a quarter of the votes in an upwards of 6 horse race, you're doing pretty well.

Anyone who is still working and fails to vote is a bit spineless in my opinion (I can understand the whole "none of the above, they are all weasels" attitude in an election, but "I don't know whether to strike or not so I'll just leave it to others to decide" seems an indication of indifference to the issue)

Splendid post.

It's not matt, it's delwboy. Banned from here and the BBS I believe. His eyes swivel so much that most of the time he's looking at the inside of his own head. And that's not a nice place to be.

I would disagree with you on 'progress'. Your view is rather nihilist, and it assumes that progress has to be grand and overarching, when it can happen in little increments. Would you not say gay marriage legislation was progress? The introduction of the NMW?

No, I'd call it change. Progress presumes some truth towards which we march, but there is no truth and that somehow the future will be a better tomorrow, not different.

In reality, the world changes and people change and society changes, but its not for the better, its just change, and it can go 'the other way'

I see,so both "derben" and "The Judge" are posters who have unfortunately been banned by the BBS before joining our happy bunch?

I more or less agree with this; but everyday life has got better over the years, progress is not an illusion, it happens, but it is slow and often disappointing.

That's a very long link Nick - even for you. Thanks for the applause though, the problem is, I expect we will disagree as to what constitutes 'progress'.

Seems TSSA have backed down over weekend strikes.

Shame those CUNDS at RMT won't put the entire nation first for a change.
