direct line recently sent me a renewal with an increase of 25%--my no claims goes back to the days when a bloke with a red flag walked in front of my car!

They just assume that because you have an existing policy that you will just renew ad-infinitum.

Rip off industry and sadly we pay for those people who take the insurers for a ride.

My premium for home/house insurance with Direct Line went up from £260 to £360 over a year. I told them what to do with it, and used CIS at a cost of £270 for the same cover.

I've done some IT work for insurance companies in the past, and one of the criteria they provide when they go out for quotes is the business type - New Business is quoted significantly lower than renewal, so it's no coincidence that your premiums go up, and then you can get them back to the previous levels by shopping around.

A very standard business practice - The loss leader - where in you reduce profit in short term, even to making a loss, and then recoup that in the long term because of the convenience you can offer.

If they have said it is a write off, I would be asking how much are they going to pay for the car and when.

They will then try and offer a low amount where you waste more time going back and forth arguing for them to increase their payment

Until fairly recently this is how I got all of my cars. I'd buy an old car that was an insurance right off, from body work and then replace the panels with ones from a scrap yard (with the help of my dad who was a mechanic). Its a little bit more of a hassle with the ministry getting them re-approved as road worthy.

That said, I paid 125 for a car that lasted another five years (including the cost of the MOT, re-registration and door panel - although it was a slightly different silver).

Its astonishing how wasteful the automotive trade actually is in order to promote the new and second hand market (and Bodyshops notoriously overcharge on quotes for insurance companies).

I wouldnt agree with that summary of the motor trade per se, more that the insurance companies will write off a car when its repair bill approaches 70-75% of the vehicles current value. They regularly send engineers out to question/check repair reports and a heck of alot of work is done at discounted labour rates to those that the general public would pay.

I don't really get how things like this make the news while the complete fraud they commit as their day to day business is just accepted.

Still waiting for the savings they should be delivering to males as a result of no longer being allowed to discriminate in favour of 'safer' female drivers.

in my experience all insurance companies, big or small, cheap or expensive are great at providing cover. Its when you need them to pay out that all of em will wiggle and squirm to do anything possible to avoid it. B@$t@rds, the lot of em. waiting 3 years for a claim to be sorted at the mo which affects premium massively. thats allianz. not exactly a minnow eh hoof?
