I am of the right.

But simple labels are just that.

If I were to categorize myself I suppose I'd say 'red tory'.

I'm British working class and I reckon I stick up for them far more than you egalitarians do.

Lets go over my 'lefty' elements that I've supported on these boards.

I don't agree with state allowed protection of wealth that lowers social mobility and harms the very notion of meritocracy.

I'd ban private schools.
I'd ban religious schools.
I'm not too fond about some aspects of private health care, though I wouldn't ban it.
I'd increase social housing and not allow sell offs beyond a set percentage. This means supporting a house building plan.
I would look to attack 'protected elitism' whenever I found it. An elite isn't by itself a bad thing but access to it should only come from a genuine meritocracy.
I'd protect British working class jobs from lower paid immigration by control of our borders.

There you go.....I regard people who only fall into 'left' or 'right' categorises, in the political party sense..... as political sheep.

Second as "sheep" only to those who fall into the trap of categorising others simplistically and perjoratively as falling into catch all cliches with simple labels like "you egalitarians" "liberal left elite" and "left leaning liberals",eh

I agree we should have a blanket term; I would suggest 'politically correct twerps'.

I thought you might be one for blanket labels.

"politically correct twerps" or "politically incorrect different word beginning with t's"?

Good post Stirling, I agree with most of your ideas here. I too regard myself as 'left' in a number of areas - further left by a mile in wanting to promote the interests of the British working class than members of the new left/libs are. The new left is more interested in protecting the interests of various minorities, Palestinians, asylum seeks etc. They actually are contemptuous of ordinary British working class people (unless they have some ethnic 'heritage' of course).

Precisely Derben.

I had a respect for the old Labour party in so much as it truly looked to the British working classes first without exception.

The infection with the modern left is about being a 'world citizen' and egalitarian. A playful mindset that I believe worsens the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable here.

I respect and support helping nations abroad to a reasonable degree by virtue of being a good neigbour and by expressing humanity....in for example situations of natural disasters......And I agree for example that while we shouldn't take them in we shouldn't let people knowingly drown in the Med without trying to help.

But first and fulmost the responsibility of any political wing of any party should be to those here....paying taxes with allegiance to this country.

One of the places where this country has gone seriously wrong is in the ignoring of allegiance....The downplaying of allegiance and commitment to this country. This idea that everyone is of equal standing independent of how they regard this land.

It stabs at the very best in this country.

For individuals I'm happy to categorize and then be corrected.....I can only say what I observe.

However, when using the term generally I'm perfectly right to use those terms.....Because collectively I believe those categories exist and are in the majority in the areas I describe.

Labels are fine to use when generalizing.

Good choice.

Clarkson fans wouldn't have been happy with anyone except Clarkson. Max Mosley perhaps but I think he may be dead so possibly not an inspired choice.

It's bad enough to insinuate that Max (not dead) is his father, nevermind that Clarkson is or that's what his fans would want.

eh? I laughed at topcat's post.... where's the bit about being his father or am I being thick?

I probably should have written it as edited above. Which is what I think topcat meant.

Quality come back Stu.

I think your connection with Victor Meldrew was missed first time.... I fear your Ched Evans connection has gone the same way.

I kind of agree with a lot of this, though I do believe that to some degree the UK has a global responsibility, as well as a national one, given the increasingly global nature of politics - Which is odd given that I don't actually really subscribe to notions of National Identity and Nationalism, the reality is that representation must first and foremost be to the electorate, and not unelected interest groups, business or lobbyists etc.

A part of the problem with the right wing politics (including New Labour) has been to increasingly rely on third party influence, especially corporate and lobby interests on policy, over the electorate, and couple this with a reduction of the responsibility of state to its citizens, tax paying or otherwise, to charities - which have increasingly gained political power and status (even if its a 'good cause').

Take homelessness (for the left) increasingly this was something the state provided provision for through charitable organisations - when the responsibility for citizen welfare is a responsibility of the state - not business or charities. Similarly, the right has seen privatisation as a means of providing 'essential functions of state' (prisons, utilities).

In doing so, this has abdicated the 'social contract' between citizens and state, to unelected and largely unaccountable, third parties, who have as such increased their political influence beyond that of the electorate.
