Has anyone noticed that Dylan Roof looks like Gareth in The Office? I expect Mackenzie Crook could get into character and come up with a few imaginative suggestions as to how Roof could be executed.

How many innocent people were executed in the last ten years of the death penalty? If less then 35, then I would say we would be ahead of the game in having a death penalty.

Edited by derben (22 Jun 2015 2.56pm)

I would say that if a single innocent person was executed, ever, then you have all the reason you need for not having the death penalty.

Not too bothered about the 35+ people killed by the released murderers then?

The option isn't simply kill them or release them. There's the third option of not letting them out, to kill again.

I think you have to have some capacity by which 'society forgives and freedom' can be earned, even allowing for very serious crimes. Only those who have given a whole life tariff should arguably face the inevitability of death behind bars.

If someone goes on a rampage with either a gun, machete or any other weapon that should be a starting point for a whole life tariff regardless of how many people they killed or injured.

I'd put those who plant bombs in the same bracket too, regardless of their "cause".

Another prime example.

Optimistic as ever

I'd be interested to know if Roof has brothers and sisters and if so what type of up bringing they had as well as Roof of course.
also has Roofs family condemmed the killings?

I believe that as soon as the shootings were announced on the TV news (almost immediately) along with a photo of the suspect, Roof's father called the police, identified his car and license plate number, as assisted them in helping to track him down as he fled the scene.

I expect he knew he was a few tiles short of a roof.

So there you go. I think anyone who has children knows they have minds of their own which often in no way reflect on their parents or their upbringing. Believe me, Dylan Roof's family are victims in this tragedy too. I can only imagine how they feel right now, having both "lost" a child and having a child who's a mass murderer simultaneously. Their suffering; a mixture of guilt and despair, must be almost beyond comprehension.

yeah i agree Roofs family must be in bits right now, must of been hard for his uncle to call the police but i admire him for letting them know.

Roofs family will be living a life sentence from now on.

their despair shared by the families who lost loved ones in the shootings.

Roofs family will be living a life sentence from now on.

They will feel the same sense of grief as the victims on top of which, rightly or wrongly, they will also feel they are in some way responsible where the victims are simply victims. And they will continue to love Dylan, for all the anguish that doing so will cause them, because that's what families do. It must have taken enormous moral courage for the uncle to call the police in a country that has the death penalty, knowing that so doing would likely contribute to the demise of his nephew. It just goes to show that the line between someone who is a good and courageous person and someone who is evil is wafer thin; they share the same DNA.

Yes, his music can be quite therapeutic during hard times.

Yes, choice is the key phrase. Dignitas won't kill you unless you can a) pay their fee b) terminally ill or suffering terribly c) capable of making the decision yourself.

Things get further complicated as administering lethal drugs is a comprehensive breach of the Hippocratic Oath, which is why doctors in the death chambers are merely observers, not protagonists. The lethal injections are set up and administered by non-medical personnel because a doctor can't do it and the "patient" won't.

Doctors at Digitas don't administer the fatal dose either, its the patient or someone with the patient.

I'd generally agree with you, and the legal system pretty much would put those kinds of offences in the 35 to 40 years or whole life tariff category.

Often of course people in the UK who have gone on rampages, particually without guns, have been sectioned under mental health acts, and treated, usually for a form of paranoid schizophrenia which complicates the matter somewhat.

Its generally the assumption of the Judicary that a 35-40 year minimum tariff is a whole life sentence barring 'dramatic evidence of rehabilitation'.

With active terrorists, who've actually committed an act, whole life makes sense, with release being explicitly only being available where miscarriage of justice occurred, the individual provided key information and intelligence* or as part of a peace process.

* In return for which the tariff is lowered, or a set sentence or suspended is applied (such as where the individual turned themselves in before committing the act). Ideally the leverage can be very useful in creating double agents.
