Tragically, people have now adopted it as the ideal norm for society, rather than a subtle, and subverive, means of manipulating and stimulating discourses in society into resolution.

The problem nowadays is that actions and statements are publicised with the context stripped away. Snippets of comments are used to generate outrage, usually for the personal agenda or aggrandisement of whoever is snipping the comment.

Political correctness is thus lost under an avalanche of clickbaiting.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

Political Correctness is probably one of the most misunderstood and abused concepts ever.

Absolutely true. Really, it's just become a stick with which the right thoughtlessly beats the left when it needs to find a conveniently available and low-hanging stick to do so. More or less any action which the right dislikes can be and usually is filed under "political correctness" when a deeper analysis of the offending behaviour in order to find real fault with it seems too difficult. On the whole, errors of political correctness where they do exist (and, of course, some do) are made with a good heart and are thus at least easier to forgive than errors of malice.

After spending the last couple of days playing down a huge sexual assault because you don't like the fact it was committed by migrants, you have the barefaced cheek to suggest that people who think that perhaps PC has gone a little too far, when talented scientists are hounded from their jobs and the public eye for a couple of ill-advised remarks, are simply looking for excuses to insult women and minorities. As I said. Pathetic.

Show me one post where I have done typed that about Koln station incident. You just don't like the truth. For you, " PC" is just a moniker for all those "things" you can't say.

Some of the racists and misogynists who jump to their misguided conclusions, should really not let their fingers near a keyboard.

BTW to assist you I have posted once translating the obviously incompetent Police statement from German to English (with no comment).

Ill advised remarks? If you are (presumably) talking about Tim Hunt and his sacking last year, he said "Let me tell you about my trouble with girls. Three things happen when they are in the lab. You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticise them, they cry."

I agree that the reaction was a bit out of control (with all of the social media craziness), but his remarks were stupid, insensitive and grossly out of touch, especially considering science is a field where women are already woefully under represented. He deserved to be dismissed from his post.

Or should we all have just chuckled, said, 'silly chap,' and let him get on with further offensive remarks?

It was me remarking on the Cologne incident, not peffers. I wasn't playing the incident down as you call it, merely stating it wasn't mass rapes (as I have written on here many times since) but some don't seem to acknowledge this fact.

The remarks were hardly 'offensive'. They were something called a 'joke'.

As for women being underrepresented in science, why on earth are we expected to be so concerned with this?

For a start, those women actually interested in being in science are doing great due to the desire of institutions to hire more women. It's actually their male peers being put at a disadvantage, simply for having the wrong genitalia.

Meanwhile, what about all those fields where men are underrepresented? For example, just about every other part of the education system.

Finally, where is the concern over the under representation of women in all the crap and dangerous jobs? I'm thinking things like cleaning sewers, rubbish collection, forestry, mining, deep sea fishing, working on oil rigs, etc.

What happened to Tim Hunt was disgusting, and it all followed a familiar pattern - e.g. as happened with that scientist who, having been put into the limelight after landing a probe on a comet, was forced to tearfully apologize for wearing a 'sexist' shirt.
