My Ford Focus is 10 years old this year and still going strong, so I guess I'd recommend it!

Had a Honda Civic and it was a fantastic car never skipped a beat. Favourite thing was the big red ENGINE START button.

Got an 2.0 TDI A3 now and it goes like the clappers when over taking on the motorway, brilliant car.

Check out KIA, unbelievable value and great service and finance offers are very reasonable.

I had the Rio which despite being the size of a fiesta comfortably seated 5 - the Ceed is also a great motor.

Designed by the guy behind the new shaped Audi's.

I would highly recommend. Hyundai are basically the same company so I imagine it all comes down to your preference on design.

(I upgraded to a BMW which caused me no end of problems and impulsively replaced that with an Abarth a few months back and it's by far the most fun I've had in a car - albeit no way family friendly!!)

Seconded, have had two Kias, both excellent, 7 year warranty , after sales service has been outstanding, whats not to like.

Ford C-max.

We are also a 4 person family. Rides well, cheap to run and a boot the size of Fingle's Cave. It was recommended to me by a bloke in the trade as ideal for our purposes. Also, you will get plenty of change on your budget unless you seek to buy relatively new. Ours is a 57 plate and cost under £4k.

Apparently the S-max is pretty good too, but is the size of a bus and unnecessary for our purposes. However, if you find you are also ferrying around friends of kids, in-laws etc. then that may the one for you.

Thanks Silvertop. Big enough for say a 1 week break with a family of 4?

6 in my family so we have had a ford galaxy for the last few years. Have just ordered a BMW 2 series gran tourer though which should be arriving in early September. It's BMWs attempt to crack the 7 seater family car market to rival the Galaxy, scenic etc.

Never had a BMW so will be interested to see what it's like. Expensive but hopefully it will last us a fair while!!

Have you gone diesel or petrol?

If the former, fill up from shell every three tanks, use the additives and a decent long run often. I know it's standard for diesels but my BMW was doing over 40 motorway miles a day and I had serious problems with the DPF and other exhaust components including sensors.

I loved the car, seriously loved the car but I had to get rid in the end as it was just a nightmare going into limp mode on a regular basis.

Cheers for the advice DeSouza. It is going to be a diesel. To be honest we only do about 20-30 miles a day... Do I need to give it a good ragging every day to stop the above??... Also why diesel from the Shell garage?? Only asking as my knowledge of cars etc ain't great!!

It's not so much a question of booting the arse out the engine, they are programmed so if you do about 60mph constant for around 15mins it will burn off the excess soot that causes the problems.

If you're doing mainly inner city mileage I'd recommend doing this once a week (mechanics might suggest longer intervals).

Shell diesel has more additives to the fuel, these help clean the engine components - supermarket fuel is as you would expect, not so refined.

A decent diesel additive should be available in most petrol stations and using that every 4 tanks will also help the engine run smooth - it costs about £5 a bottle and does 2 tanks worth so £2.50 every month isn't much.

My BMW had so many sensors, most decent modern cars do, but if you ever have one go faulty outside of the warranty make sure your mechanic buys actual BMW replacements - I tried after-market on mine once and I had to get it replaced after week because the computer was too sensitive and the readings it was producing were still giving the fault code.

It sounds scary but don't let my experience put you off - I'd buy the new 3 Series tomorrow but just take better care of the blooming thing!

Just a thought on diesels. The way things are going with likely tax rises on them due to pollution levels and a probable sudden drop in 2nd hand values of diesel cars, I'd tend to steer clear.

only buy a French vehicle if you are comfortable giving your mechanic a shovel full of cash every month.

Japanese, German, Korean...are the best. There is a little booklet on economical motoring available from the AA or halfords with some excellent advice. They recommend allowing a car 5 years of depreciation before buying it.

Sage advice, in fact my 6y/o Abarth has increased in value since I picked it up by at least a grand!
