My grankids schooljust been shut for the day due to the boiler broken???? its hot so who needs a boiler.
They can shut a school for so many reasons snow , teacher ill, teacher training, in tearm time ,

I went to school from 1960 to 1972.

I can honestly say that in that time the schools I went to never ever closed except for formal school holidays and weekends.

In 1963 I got to school through the thickest fog I've ever seen then weeks later really heavy snow. I was expected to get there on time too.

It was tough back then... I don't think they would have shut the school at Aberfan if there hadn't been deaths!

I'd imagine the difference is that teachers tend to live further away from school than they did in your day Hoof.

Training days were introduced under Kenneth Baker in the eighties. Kids still go to school the same amount of days, the school year was and still is 39 weeks.

Same for me !

I can recall trudging up the hill through thick snow and wouldn't get away with saying I was late because of the weather. Detention and maybe on Saturday morning as well ! Perhaps the strap or cane ! Tough in those days !

I don't have an issue with term time holidays if the children continue to be educated on their trip, don't miss some of the important things they should be learning and continue to read everyday.

A little girl was taken out from my school a week early before halfterm so she could be two weeks off in Mexico. Whilst she was officially 'off sick' none of us minded because we were promised that she would read every day and we provided some important maths work that she would have missed otherwise. The fact that she was going to be in Mexico we saw as a really positive thing for extending her horizons.

What I would say is that no matter which government is in charge, attendance is something that is used as a stick to beat schools with and is the reason schools take it so seriously. Write to all 650 mps in parliament to demand that education is no longer seen as a political football and situations like this will no longer occur.

Well I suppose it depends what you get up to on holiday. That said, anyone who's ever stayed in a caravan in Skeggness will probably agree with that statement.

Took my two kids out of school after Easter during school term for the first time ever. Paid 50% less than normal, hotel and flights were not busy and everywhere we went was chilled and relaxed, loved it and spent quality time with my kids. Any headteacher that takes that stance doesn't deserve to make decisions. Obviously i would not take mine out of school during exams ect but a week off in the middle of what is day to day schooling is nothing.

Agree.
holidays are way better out of school holiday dates, bubble.
cheaper, the restuarants are not chocka, the holiday venues actually do give a s*** as they are not over full, less people etc.
As a painting contractor, the school holidays were the most impossible dates to go on hols.as I was painting schools.
my girls are all well out of school now, but some years when they were at school we either had no holiday or just went in October & took the consequences.
Cant take a family holiday but the school will tell you to keep the kids off when it suits them for training etc.

Good point mate. School holidays are the busy periods for a lot of contractors.

Presumably we're supposed to holiday separately from our families.

For some of the contractors I've known, that is a legal requirement.

Of course back in those days, you could still f**k the kids and get away with it.

I used to have nightmares about Aberfan even though it was five years before I was born!

Bet you kicked yourself when you left school and realised you have to pay for that kinda stuff.
