Bryan Ruiz just signed for some Portuguese team and has a £20m+ release clause. Im sure if they received a bid of £10-15m for him they'd accept it.

A release clause basically means an offer the current team have to accept in order for the other team to speak to the player. Teams can bid less, which may get accepted but may not.

I don't think he's played in goal very much.

If this [Link] is to be believed, we made an offer of £3m, half a million under his release clause and QPR rejected it. Why would we do that? Does that make sense to anyone else or can anyone offer up an reasonable explanation of what we'd bother making an offer we much know QPR would reject?

You do realise this is real money and not Championship Manager?

Why wouldn't we bid lower?

Sorry I guess I was being too cryptic...

I guess my actually question is, why would QPR take £3m if the release clause is £3.5m?

They may need the money.

They may need to sell before they can buy, and so although the clause may be £3.5m, they would accept less to complete other business elsewhere.

Release clauses are all well and good but if your not flush with cash or options you may well accept a lesser figure than risk keeping an asset to the detriment of investment elsewhere.

I must apologise for my sarcasm earlier. This site and the BBS has turned me into a bit of an online knob. Too many arguments with actual unpleasant people.

Your reasons and the other reason given are logical when speaking generally, but this is QPR. Normal logic doesn't apply

QPR don't need the money, not with the chunk they got from the sale of Sterling and the fact they will get at least £20m from the sale of Philips and Austin.

Should they get the fine that was originally reported, half a million becomes almost irrelevant.

Is half a million a lot to QPR...or for that matter us? I guess it's all relative. Maybe it is and the amounts being bounded around we're willing to pay for the likes of Remy and Williams and the amount we did pay for Cabaye has me slightly jaded. I guess it is 1/6 of the original offer. But If we offered £10.5m for Remy and Chelsea said no make it £11m, we'd snap their hand off right?

Robert Green is 35 so there's a good chance McCarthy could be their number one next year, why would you sell a potential first team player for less than you needed to.

It's almost as if we're trolling Fernandes/Ferdinand, which by the way I'd be in total support of if it were the case. Next bid to be £3,500,001 then?

Oh and no worries mate, I'm a big boy :-)

Good comment. QPR fans rate McCarthy very highly it seems and many would prefer him between the sticks than Green. Similar to the Jules or Hennessey debate we are having...

The Mirror (yes I know) are reporting that McCarthy will sign for us in time to join the squad to fly to South Africa. Surely you don't spend £3.5M on a goalkeeper (assuming that's the transfer fee) unless he's coming in as number 1.

I don't see why everybody has such a problem with us building a good, strong squad. Two good keepers. 1 young, 1 experienced - what's not to like.
