Has anyone ever met a German or Hebrew speaker in this country, who doesn't also speak English? I'd have thought Urdu would be on the list. And what about French? There are loads of people here from countries where French is spoken, Especially much of North and West Africa. I'm afraid it's not discrimination. It doesn't say British people can't apply, just that they must speak one of those languages. I do find it a bit silly though that all applicants must not only be billingual, but that the language in addition to English must be one of only 14 listed. I expect they will relax this rule once they realise that there aren't actually that many people with one of those languages, as well as English, beating a path to the recruitment centre. Bizarrely, neither Somali or French are on the list. Its thought Somali is London's third most spoken language and London is the sixth largest French speaking city in the world! Its a month-long trial.So,perhaps its just to try to get some publicity to getting in some officers speaking any of the listed languages and will then be dropped.

I don't agree with it, not as a base recruitment policy, but its important to keep in mind that its an additional language requirement. You still have to be fluent in English as well. I'd imagine the Met doesn't really have a problem with people who are British or English, but that by focusing on a bi-lingual intake they can reduce the cost of using third party translators (who are really expensive). It also allows officers on patrol or surveillance to understand what people are hiding behind when not speaking in English. Its not uncommon for any enterprise or organization to recruit based on special requirements. I suspect that it won't result in the Police wearing sandals and kaftans, but has more to do with affecting cost savings by reducing the need to rely on third party contractors. The Police service and military have recently made quite a few changes in order to obtain access to specialist skills (my 40 year old mate just did his basic training and automatically became a reservist so that the army could gain access to a forensic expert.

The course "CKP" which you have to pay for out of your own pocket and only lasts Two years, does not guarantee you a job. You must have it or be on the course before you can even apply. I think you now also have to have lived in the MET area for more than two years. My daughter joined the MET 6 months ago and was one of the last people to get in on the old criteria. She still had to do the CKP (which varies greatly from college to college). Even then they were trying to encourage how shall I put this "a more diverse group of applicants". Offering training sessions on how to pass the interview process, free if you were from a minority background or £200 if not? In addition they had extra help with course work. They have also lowered the Pass mark for the English a Maths test. Despite all this the uptake for the Job from the target market was pretty small. It's a job my Daughter has always wanted to do and it would have been a real shame if they had changed the goalposts just before she apllied.

I thought it was one of our aims to get everyone to speak English as a prerequisite of living here anyway? The idea being that they will integrate with society much better and not wish to live in a ghetto style commune with others they can communicate with in their own language and remain isolated. In which case the need for multilingual police officers will soon be redundant if that policy is enforced and people learn the mother tongue. On a practical level, the chances of one police officer speaking one extra language meeting up with a suspect that speaks that extra language will be pretty slim anyway. I can see that a police officer with additional language skills could be helpful but to exclude everyone without language skills is unfair and short sighted quite frankly.

Even where people have learned English, I suspect many would prefer to be interviewed in their first language as their vocabulary and understanding of terms probably wouldn't be good. Also people tend to lie about how good their language is, and of course speak in a non-common language to obfuscate what they are saying. And its much more convenient than trying to get a translator on the weekend. Our language skills in this country are very poor. Most other countries the majority of the population speak two or three languages.

That's not necessarily a bad representation. Better than I actually imagined.
