And what does it say about arms manufacturers that they produced a civilian version of the M-16 in order to get around potential restrictions on the ownership of such weapons.

There is no feasible reason to own an assault rifle, or one that's a civilian version that's semi-automatic. No one really hunts with them (they're not accurate enough), and they're not really suited to home defense either.

I have always wondered what leads someone to produce a product for a domestic market, knowing full well it will kill someone most probably in criminal circumstances.

America is a wonderful country if you look at it holistically.

The chances are still very low.....It's like anywhere else....You face a larger chance of getting mugged if you are in some places more than others.
