Night Mail (poem)

This is the night mail crossing the Border,
Bringing the cheque and the postal order,
Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,
The shop at the corner, the girl next door.
Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb:
The gradient's against her, but she's on time.
Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder
Shovelling white steam over her shoulder,
Snorting noisily as she passes
Silent miles of wind-bent grasses.
Birds turn their heads as she approaches,
Stare from bushes at her blank-faced coaches.
Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course;
They slumber on with paws across.
In the farm she passes no one wakes,
But a jug in a bedroom gently shakes.

ALL THROUGH MY LIFE I THOUGHT THIS WAS BETJEMAN BUT IT IS WH AUDEN , LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY

interviewer " iggy , do you think you influenced anybody?"
iggy pop " I think I wiped out the 60`S "

There was a time when buying a ticket from Forest Hill to Norwood Junction would have got you a little piece of card saying:

DARTMOUTH ARMS To JOLLY SAILOR

The Slow Train.

Miller's Dale for Tideswell ...
Kirby Muxloe ...
Mow Cop and Scholar Green ...

No more will I go to Blandford Forum and Mortehoe
On the slow train from Midsomer Norton and Mumby Road.
No churns, no porter, no cat on a seat
At Chorlton-cum-Hardy or Chester-le-Street.
We won't be meeting again
On the Slow Train.

I'll travel no more from Littleton Badsey to Openshaw.
At Long Stanton I'll stand well clear of the doors no more.
No whitewashed pebbles, no Up and no Down
From Formby Four Crosses to Dunstable Town.
I won't be going again
On the Slow Train.

On the Main Line and the Goods Siding
The grass grows high
At Dog Dyke, Tumby Woodside
And Trouble House Halt.

The Sleepers sleep at Audley End and Ambergate.
No passenger waits on Chittening platform or Cheslyn Hay.
No one departs, no one arrives
From Selby to Goole, from St Erth to St Ives.
They've all passed out of our lives
On the Slow Train, on the Slow Train.

Cockermouth for Buttermere ... on the Slow Train,
Armley Moor Arram ...
Pye Hill and Somercotes ... on the Slow Train,
Windmill End.

Lyrics: Michael Flanders

Reminds me of the spoof version once in the Viz Profanisaurus:

Guard's Parcel
Pulling up Beattock the guard needs a s***e,
but there's no bog's till Glasgow, much later tonight.
In time-honoured fashion he empties his arsehole
into brown paper to make a guard's parcel.

Got a double decker train in the Netherlands from Rotterdam to Amsterdam and that was about twenty years ago! I also got a single decker back the other way, the whole interior was bright orange. My blazed eyes couldn't deal with it.

I ate a double decker on a train once. Just the once, mind.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Whilst I have never eaten a double decker on a train, once, when I was a kid, I ate an apple on a French train as my father slept in the window seat.

I sought permission from my mother to throw the apple core out of the window and duly launched it with all my might. Unfortunately and surprisingly the window was closed. The apple core exploded on impact with the remarkably clear and deceptive glass thereby showering my father in apple and pips.

Oh how we laughed....very many years later

When I'm on the prowl you'd better run like hell
