He's been played out wide a lot though similar to Wickham at Sunderland.

I think we can argue the toss ad nauseam although I would say when he's been played out wide, it's more often been when he's started than when he's come on as a sub. In the latter case, he's usually been brought on late in games where we've been behind, to score goals. But either way, the fact is he has not, as some people claim, been any kind of supersub.

If QPR join the party and bid for Gayle if Austin moves on, and given that they are also interested in Gedioura, then I could see Philips coming to Selhurst as part of the deal. All speculation of course, getting carried away!

i want him to stay with us, we know he can score goals from the bench.

if we need to loan him our for gametime then fair enough, but to swap him for somebody who we dont know can score goals from the bench is a ludicrous idea.

I agree that he is not the best striker we could have as an impact sub but he is the best we do have. What other striker would you suggest is the best to come on and get us a goal in the dying minutes?

As the facts, which I have stated above, prove, Gayle is NOT an impact sub because he makes almost no impact in that role. 4 goals in 29 games, two of them in one game, end the argument and dispel your claim. 2 goals in 28 games off the bench in an average of 18 minutes played is not making an impact.

The simple fact is that we have brought in Wickham and Bamford because Gayle has not been effective, either off the bench or starting (whether you want to cite being played out of position or not as an excuse is up to you.) We will presumably stick with Chamakh, Murray and/or Campbell to augment those two as there is plenty of evidence to suggest that all three offer more to the team than Gayle does.

Gayle is at present simply a signing that has not worked out. If he's been played out of position, that's because he hasn't been good enough to win the shirt in his preferred position. Talking him up, as Parish (and to a lesser extent Pards) have both done this summer strikes me as little more than an attempt to retain some value in the transfer market; after all, you don't slag off an item you're trying to sell. Everyone needs to move on. Gayle strikes me a nice, honest kid. But nowhere close to what's required at the level we're at now.

How do we know this? One match against Liverpool apart, he's scored two goals in 28 games off the bench. The fact is, FACT, he DOESN'T score goals from the bench.

Just to add some context to my previous post, Gayle scores a goal an average of every 131 minutes as a sub. A couple of years ago (a year for which I happen to have stats to hand) Edin Dzeko was the leading impact sub, scoring a goal every 59 minutes played. Chicharito was next, scoring every 74 minutes. Steven Fletcher every 84 minutes. Darren Bent every 90 minutes. Gayle would not even be close to the top 10.

This would be a direct, instant downgrade. Also I heard he has an attitude problem. High wages, sounds like the kind of player we should be avoiding, not swapping Gayle for

Infact id love to know his goalscoring stats as a substitute.

His stats quickly put paid to a myth that was essentially forged on a single night a year and a half ago against Liverpool.

In the season before last, Gayle made 15 appearances off the bench and scored 4 goals (two on the aforementioned in front of the Sky cameras). He totalled 262 minutes played meaning he averaged around 17 minutes on the pitch per game. Only in two of those 15 games did he play 5 minutes or less; in other words, he invariably had time to make an impact as a sub.

Last season, Gayle came off the bench 14 times playing a total of 265 minutes. This averages out to about 19 minutes per game. Again, only twice he came on for 5 minutes or less. He scored 0 goals as a sub last season.

In short, in 29 subs appearances Gayle has scored 4 goals in 3 games (two of the goals coming in the one game against Liverpool). Put another way, remove that one-off night and he's scored 2 goals in 28 games as a sub for Palace.

So I think we can forget the popular notion, founded entirely on one match in front of the Sky cameras, that Gayle is any kind of supersub.

This is not to have a go at him. It's just to be realistic.

Good post. I do remember that gayle also scored that last minute cracker against west ham as a sub? I think the fact that gayle has scored goals for us at crucial times and that he is a likeable character, makes me want him to do well despite the facts!
Still he has scored 12 PL goals compared to wickhams 11 in less minutes. Both played out of position at times....

To be honest, researching stats is pretty tedious and by and large I'd rather do almost anything else. But this ridiculous claim that Gayle is an "impact sub" has always been palpably rubbish and I can't believe so many people who watch Palace week in and week out have fallen for it. In the end, when all else fails, you have to spend an hour unearthing the evidence in order to end the conversation. And the facts make it very, very clear that Gayle is NOT an impact sub.

I don't think a twenty minute cameo in a single match has ever so totally made a players reputation as Gayle against Liverpool. It's like pretending someone's 15 minutes of fame qualifies them for a Nobel Prize. Gayle is proof that football supporters see precisely what they want to see and nothing else.

I know he is not an impact sub, but I struggle to see another striker who we had in the team last year who could do that job. Also, I struggle to see what campbell offers to the team that means we don't need gayle. Yes he bullies defences, but that can't be used to mask the fact that he isn't really a premier league quality striker.

Murray is a fantastic striker with a brilliant footballing brain as many have already stated, but clearly, he is getting on and it dosent look like he's going to be our first choice striker, and isn't much of an impact player.

Gayle has the pace and ability to open a game when things are becoming flat, and is widely quoted as the best finisher at the club. I believe that he still has a place in the squad, and for certain oppositions with not so well drilled defences, I think he will be in the right place at the right time to get a goal. With improved midfield talent in yohan, I can see him getting on the end of more and more through balls, and if he's got the chance, he will put it in the back of the net.

Then again I'm sure wickham is an informed choice and could prove to be both Glenn Murray and gayle rolled into one. Although, I think it will take time.
